Seeing red and having fun - guess where I killed a little time til the movie I went to see started

The movie, by the way, was Slumdog Millionaire, and though it's not unprecedented, the way large parts of the movie were presented was a visual paradise of frame after frame of practically still photos - art photographs.
It was a visual dream, and a damn fine story, and well acted.
Worthy of all the awards already collected and the ones yet to come.

I spent a VERY formative year in South Asia, and I can't even begin to describe the richness, intensity, and vastly diverse range of "being there" experiences that year gave me. Visual is just a part of the whole, and maybe the ambient sounds and characters will add some more, but it sounds like a great way to share a part of my experience with my SO, who is returning to this area in a week or so. It's very hard to explain what is so uniquely valuable in a world that others have never encountered. Even a call center worker in India was puzzled when I commented that his was, in my view, the richest country I had ever been in. The hour was late and I was too inarticulate to explain and didn't want to get him reprimanded for idle chatter. But it sounds like that film might be one way to help others get a hint.

share it. I've been to Egypt, and seen some of this myself, similarities abound.

Thanks. I looked at the photo and video collection on the PBS site - http://www.pbs.org/thestoryofindia/gallery/ . It looks like a good series, and the images are a good illustration of what I meant by the rich diversity of the land and people.

10. It was really wonderful

and covered the history of India from the beginning through the modern age. I was fascinated. I've always loved India anyway -- I cook Indian meals a couple of times a week. :)

11. Ok, you just caused a case of involuntary salivation.

Going by train and bus put me in the same class environment as Indian travelers and in easy reach of their food and lodging services. Cheap, utilitarian meals, but yummy. Street vendors, yummy. One higher end meal was when I hopped off a bus at Jog Falls and climbed back up and while waiting to catch the next one had a meal at the nearly (completely?) empty restaurant that catered to heavy weekend traffic. Served on a palm leaf with rice and maybe 8 other clumps of edibles surrounding the rice. Yummy*2^3. Made of plants very few have ever heard of and spices few can even name. Yummy.

14. I have probably close to 10 Indian cookbooks

and we're always on the prowl for exotic spices when we travel Outside. HullBoss built me a spice cabinet that's about eight feet across and seven feet tall, which I've filled with jars of varying sizes containing all sorts of wonderful things.

I've even got a curry tree growing under lights in my basement. :)

12. Over Thanksgiving holiday

I visited the Minneapolis Institute of Art while they were showing "India, Public Places, Private Spaces". It was a wonderful exhibit, and if it comes to your area, I highly recommend taking the time to see it. Talk about street art! I know there's been several discussions on this board about the ethics of street photography, but these artists truly captured the heart an breathe of India. It was interesting though, that some photo artists refused to participate in this exhibit, to show their art, simply because they did not wish to be in the same show as some of the other artists.

Foreign films always seem so much more visually interesting, and I certainly agree re: Slum Dog Millionaire.

I keep seeing red like this everywhere. It has completely made me notice how much red people use in marketing, signs, etc. Even when I just see this exact shade of red I think of Target. I mean, the shopping carts do seem a little bit orange to me, but they are a reddish orange.

The red in marketing has been going on as long as there has been advertising. Here is my favorite sign around here. At a very specific time of year and day I can get the sun popping off this sign, and I intend to take advantage of it this year.
