White Out
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 08:55 AM by NashVegas
Instead of finding myself in NOLA, as expected, this weekend, it was upstate NY, and 10 inches of fresh snow rather than 10 inch ropes of cheap beads. Life ... untweaked.

1. These pictures are making my morning. The first one, and the second, remind me
of Hudson River School paintings you could find in a gallery, with Grandma Moses touches. The general feel of all of them, other than their stark beauty, just make me thank God I live in the South.
thank you for these !

2. I hope you took your boots!
White out, indeed. I feel sorry for the ducks. These sure would have been great entries in the winter contest. Brrr. They do sort of remind me of Courier and Ives.

I'm still so obsessed with red, I want to turn that next to last picture into a "red" entry with a little color saturation and contrast. LOL, I badly need to move on to the next topic.

4. Very nice.
I especially like the first and third ones. You'd think I'd get tired of snow, but I still love it. :)

5. Thanks for the Feedback, Y'all

What I learned between #3 and the shots that followed it (which #1 and #2 actually were) was: when shooting in a snow storm, better to get an interesting shot by slowing exposure and letting the lens stop down than to try to catch the reality of flakes with a fast shot. The reality was, for me at least, they made the pic (#3) less interesting than it could have been and gave 1 and 2 a slightly ethereal look.

1: Exposure: 1/10 sec
Aperture: 22

2. Exposure: 1/10 sec
Aperture: 28.9

3. Exposure: 1/160 sec
Aperture: 7.1

(ISO 200 for all)

6. You make winter look really appealing
though in fact it's an evil, soul-destroying, crazy-making, vile, messy, abysmal, hopeless, miserable, nasty, punishing, sick and insufferably crappy thing.

On the brighter side, the storm missed us here and temps will be way above freezing here tomorrow. Small mercies.

I'm back home now, where it's going to be in the high '60s. Man, though ... I crossed that pond many times, as a child.

10. You're more of a fan of winter than I am.
At least you're far kinder in describing it than I am. :grr:

8. Those are great shots.
And thanks for the exposure tip. Big snow storm heading our way this afternoon. May just head out there with my camera.

12. looks beautiful
I'd rather be there in the snow than in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The snow makes for some gorgeous scenery.

All those are great pics. Really like the ducks.

13. I agree with whoever said it reminded them of Currier and Ives..
Ethereal is definitely the right word.

Here in Atlanta they are predicting snow this weekend, and yet it's very light jacket weather right now.

Go figure.

14. Seeing pics like these
make me miss winters. I grew up in the midwest and moved to CA during a particularly nasty winter in the late 60s, but even after all those years I do miss the beauty of new fallen snow.

I'd probably feel differently if it was me pushing that snow blower, though.
