I went ahead and downloaded it but I use Irfanview for general image viewing before opening in Photoshop. At under 9mb including a bunch of plugins Irfanview can read almost every image format that exists plus basic editing.

3. I've only taken a few RAW photos

Their file size is huge, 7+ megs, 2-3 times larger than my JPGs. I know JPG is a lossy format, but I could switch to TIFs if I was worried about image degradation. TIF files are big, but not like RAW files. Are there reasons why would an amateur such as myself should consider using the RAW format?

Anyway, I don't think the MS viewer handles my Olympus RAW format (.ORF)

4. The only reason I've found to shoot raw

is to manipulate the white point after the fact. If you are shooting for National Geo you might find that useful. Personally, I don't.
