They are pretty much out of stock everywhere. This was one of my cameras on the short list for a new compact camera, I had the Sigma DP2 on order for the last 6 weeks and even though they started shipping in dribs an drabs I canceled the order because I found out that there was a 3+ second lag between shots. Now the Lumix/Leica is high up on the list, it has a nice fast wide angle lens and I was pretty impressed with some test shots I saw as long as you stay below iso400 and it has a fairly decent HD movie mode that also utilizes the image stabilization. The bad news, try to get your hands on one and then little things like an optical viewfinder is an option that will cost around $200 and doesn't really show you what's happening during a zoom. Now you can get your hands on a Leica D-LUX 4 (made by Panasonic)for an extra $250 and a whopping $349 for the viewfinder.

To throw another wrench into the works the other contender on my list is a Powershot G10

4. I can't see any difference between the two. I'm a long time Canon

user, but I like the big sensor in the Lumix.

The Leica, it has a better warranty, 3 years as opposed to 1 year parts 90 days labor and when they come out with a D-lux 5 the red dot will always mean a better resale value.

5. I've been trying to buy this camera for months

Once I decided I wanted it, it's been out of stock since, everywhere I've looked.

I'm now looking at the Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera. A gal on a pet forum I dwell at has one and the photos are fab. Any opinions of this model of camera? I have a couple pets coming and I want to get a camera before they arrive.

Another gal has the Canon G10 and tho the photos look good they are not near the quality of the XSi. Maybe it's the operator?

8. XSi is a different ballpark

The Lumix and the G10 can probably be compared side by side. But the XSi will lead you into the land of SLR and interchangeable lenses (and its WAY bigger, which you probably already know :) )

The G10 is rather good for a semicompact camera and it gives you all manual operation if you so prefer. For a SLR shooter like me, thats a big plus.
But it will not ever compete with the XSi in terms of picture quality, unless the XSi is fitted with some seriously bad glass.

That does ofc not rule out that the G10 owner in your case does not get the best of it and the XSi owner does from hers, compounding the difference.

11. I have lenses from my 35mm EOS rebel. Maybe just buying a body

would be a good solution?
