Mt. Pisgah Cemetery (dialupers order a pizza)
Located near Cripple Creek Colorado. I took over 90 snapshots here. Hopefully the few that I’m posting will give you a sense of what this place is like. Guarantee it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Not your garden-variety “golf course type” cemetery.

The Entrance. Still had a wide angle on the camera from earlier shots I was taking. I’m standing almost directly below the gate when I took this.

Same snapshot. Since the perspective is one that makes it appear that the cemetery is pulling you in I made a half-ass attempt for the effect to be more haunting. Cripple Creek has the reputation of being the most haunted town in Colorado. I’m working on a like effect that I want to apply to a series of snapshots. Start the spooky music……

The West Side. Mt. Pisgah is still a “working” cemetery. Newer graves mixed in with older graves. This is another “spooky” :eyes: wide angle shot I’m working on. It shows the side of the cemetery where more of the newer digs are plus some different group burial areas.

The Lost Markers. Back to using a "normal" lens now. Many of the old wood markers are long gone but thankfully someone has kept an “inventory” and has placed small gray markers to indicate the spot of the various burials.

Lonely John. There is some order to the way most the graves are placed but there are actually burial sites scattered about everywhere. Either John wanted to be buried in a favorite spot or the towns people didn’t care much for the guy and dug a hole for him away from everyone else.

The Baby Graves. A little sad but very interesting. Sad because there are so many baby graves at Mt. Pisgah but interesting because of the many different wooden and metal fences put up around them.

More single baby graves. What’s unique about this cemetery is that nothing is really “maintained”. The grave marker in the foreground will eventually become part of the earth.

Mix of nature and graves. One more snapshot of some baby graves. You can see that the older one to the left actually has a bush growing out of it. An interesting one I found (not in this thread) is where an old wooden pull toy set had been placed at the base of the wooden marker. I didn’t see it at first because it was covered by the weeds that had overgrown around it.

They’re everywhere. There were some graves in this small grove of trees. I started to walk up to these but stopped for two reasons. First; there was an unknown critter moving in the undergrowth that I couldn’t see that was following my movement as I walked around the grove trying to find a clear way in. And second; when I went to walk in my foot sank a little in the ground. I looked down and saw that I had just stepped in a grave. I didn’t see it because I was too busy looking for the unknown critter and it was marked only by a very small stone next to a tree.

Landscape shot of East End. This is group of “newer” and older grave sites at the east end of the Cemetery. At the base of Mt. Pisgah.

And finally. At the very back of the cemetery at the top of the hill are a few “newer” digs. I’m not a seasoned Cemetery walker but I don’t recall ever seeing anything like this. Not sure if Hannah wanted to “look” out over the mountains from her grave or if this was done for the benefit of those that came to visit her?

That’s it. A very small taste of this interesting place. Hope a few of ya’ enjoyed seeing them.
:hi:

I was going to post this in a private gallery just for the benefit of a member of the "mutual admiration society" since it is her old childhood stomping ground and I wanted her to see what it looked like today, but I decided to let others see them.

1. the westside bw one is awesome.
I think many of them would look great in bw.

Thanks for the photos. They are all interesting.

BW conversion effect is tough, but I'm trying. As you can see all the snapshots were taken in BRIGHT sunlight. I would have liked to have taken these at dusk but the place closed at 7pm and I shot these during the only time that I had available during our little "mountain adventure" trip.

15. It hasn't changed much
I don't remember so many missing markers but maybe the old rotting wood ones fell onto the ground and dissolved. Don't know. The last time I was there was during the winter 4 or 5 years ago when the place was covered with snow.

5. What grayscale conversion technique are you using?
I'm not talking about the "spooky" apparitions, but the actual monochrome settings, etc. I'm assuming you're using Channel Mixer, but your results are far superior to most I've seen. Or is another technique?

And I agree with superconnected -- a lot of these would look good using the same technique. Particularly those with the weathered-board fences.

16. Not using any particular technique
Jus' playing around at this point. I think the BW effect was more pronounced with Lens #1 because of the better optics and the multi-layer filter attached to that particular lens.

When I used the exact same conversion on shots taken with Lens #2 the effect wasn't the same. I've had to try different techniques.

I thought about setting the camera to shoot in BW when I got there but I didn't. Wanted to get the Wildflowers, etc in color. But... I will convert a number to BW because Cemetery shots seem to always look a little better this way.

6. Nice photos
I really enjoyed the two black and whites. And I like the John Cassady grave. Is that how the letter "s" used to be written or was that just a mistake?

The "S"? If I were to wager a guess..... I'd say that the Local Headstone Crafts person was probably a recent European immigrant. Don't believe it was a mistake though that was my first thought too.

9. I've been doing that...
Proceeds from sales of my photos have been going to Equality Ohio (www.EqualityOhio.org) - a brand new organization in Ohio, founded in the wake of Ohio passing one of the worst non-traditional marriage amendments in the country. The official kickoff isn't until the first weekend in October - if you're in Ohio PM me and I'll send you more details.

The amendment is currently being used successfully by defendants in heterosexual domestic violence cases to get off the hook, since cohabitation between unmarried individuals (regardless of gender makeup of the couple) is no longer protected by the domestic violence statutes. (The amendment really was that broad.)

So far, it's just note cards, but I intend to set up my gallery on the DU photogroup site on smugmug to provide an ongoing trickle of money for the cause.

19. It's worth the trip
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 11:58 AM by F.Gordon
If you go try to take the "road less traveled" and don't go the way that all the gambling junkies use coming up from Colorado Springs. There are a few different back roads into the area that will take you longer to get there but the scenery is wonderful.

The best way in is on the old Gold Camp Road, but I think it might be closed and you definitely need a vehicle that can handle off road travel.

Edit? What else?

23. Would the back road
be any worse than the back way into Silverton with a side trip up Engineer Mountain? We did that one year and it was fun. Took just over 3 hours to get to the top of the mountain but was worth it. We didn't go into Silverton the back way though as it was late and we didn't know the roads/trails. We also had two hungry 8 year olds.

BTW I think it was you mentioned Longmont in a post that caused me to dig out the old family photos of it.

24. I checked. Gold Camp Road is closed to cars
One of the tunnels is considered unsafe. Too bad. We've driven it a few times. Once with our little Toyota Tercel wagon. It's now just open to hikers and bikers.

This isn't my photo. Gold Camp Road is the old mining train track (no more tracks) that ran from Cripple Creek/Victor to Colorado Springs.

You'd be coming in from the North? Swing west and come in from that direction. If you're coming in from the south there is an easy gravel road (nice views!!) that runs from Canon City to Victor then to Cripple Creek. Just look at a map.

29. I would almost say it
is a shame they closed the road but think it might be nice for hikers etc to have it closed. It looks a bit easier to navigate than Engineer.
Not my pictures (they are somewhere and need scanned) but here is what I found of Engineer Pass.

If you have never been up there it is worth the time.
It will be a long while before I get to CO again. * economy and all.

32. Completely understand the whole * economy thing
Has us thinkin' about packing it in and moving to a small sleepy little town.

I believe I've been on Engineer. My brother-in-law was a big time "jeeper" and went on a few drives with him.

On the off chance that you do make it back to Colorado some day, you might want to bookmark this map. Just follow the red marked roads and you'll avoid the regular "tourists" and the drunk gamblers driving up from the blood-red city of Colorado Springs.

too much family out there not too. Thank you for the map. On the moving to a small town, not sure that would help on the * thing and you tend to end up surround by bushbots. Though will say he is finally pissing off some of the farmers around here and some others.

Never been on it but it's still there. I didn't see the roving gang of donkeys though. Didn't get many shots in Cripple Creek. Was more concerned about getting Mt. Pisgah. BTW: We stopped in Woodland Park and I asked some of the locals where your old family motel was. No one knew. Sorry. I tried. Was going to get a few shots of it for you.

Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 12:55 PM by Blue_In_AK
And it was on the Colorado Springs side of Woodland Park, then about three miles out of town. Interesting you should mention that because my brother just gave me some old photos of my mother's and included were two or three of the motel and our log house. My brother was in Colorado a few years ago and the motel was still there at that time, but maybe it's since been taken down. It's been almost 40 years, after all.

11. (IMO) the first 3 and the last one
are the best as "art" and the others are good at showing some of the stuff in that cemetery. Both kinds of photography have value, but doing both in the same shot, as you have done in #3, is the challenge we face in photography. Your photography is far more than "snapshots" in all cases, and thanks for sharing them here.

Some other possibilities at that site might include using the fencing on one gravesite to frame another or a vista or going behind or at an angle thru the transparent marker to frame some other aspects of the location, rather than shooting it head on. And, as a general rule, if you are just walking around and pointing your camera at neat stuff, you are probably missing a lot of possibilities that you would find by crawling, laying on your belly, shooting straight down, climbing a tree -- and missing some good exercise as well.

That said, I got my scanner back from repairs, then had to get a new bulb for my slide projector, and then resumed going through some of my old slides. What a lot of crap! Shots I remember taking in an effort to simply show what I saw, but that failed miserably for one reason or another. Some decent ones, but WAY more junk that has value only in reminding me of an enjoyable experience. (Unfortunately they are of the 'you had to have been there' variety and the photos are of little value in giving any indication of why you might ever want to have been there.) But if you find a low percentage of good shots, remember that even the pros take a whole lot of film with them and toss nealy all of it.

20. Thank you ConsAreLiars
It's one of the my many "problems" I'm working on. I did do a few crouching tiger shots but the place is 40 acres and I just mostly shot and walked shot and walked. I think they call it "Documentary Photography".
:silly:

I need to sloooowwwwww down when I take shots and time was not on my side when I did these. Really appreciate your suggestions. I should have taken more time to compose better shots and look for ones with unique perspectives. Hopefully I will improve as time goes by. Hopefully.

12. How'd you get the swirly sky in The West Side?
It looks like ghosty-fog. Neat-o effect.

I've never seen a headstone like that last one. What was it made of? Glass? Or some kind of plastic? It's a beautiful marker, and a beautiful photo. Very well framed shot.
