After we came down from McCarthy/Kennecott, we stayed at the Liberty Falls campground outside of Chitina...
We did a little exploring and discovered that the forest floor above the falls was
covered with mushrooms of at least 50 different varieties. Unfortunately my battery was running low and I didn't know how soon I could get it recharged, so I only took a few photos, but here are some. It was really like some kind of little fairytale land -- I expected to see elves or leprechauns at any moment.
First, a squirrel condominium ... I saw several of these, composed of cone debris.
Now mushrooms
I know some of these are edible, but I wasn't about to experiment. It made me wonder how many people had to die before they figured out which ones were okay to eat and which ones weren't. We have amanitas here in our yard, and I have to keep them picked all the time so my grandsons don't get into them.
