Nikon Coolpix 7900 "Face Priority" in Portrait Mode

I can never get it lock in when I'm taking "portraits" of my cat. Might be that she's a "Tuxedo"/"Penguin" cat.

Greatly enlarged from a Coolpix 4800 at 8X --
