Not ready for Prime Time "Reflections" (post your others)

I'm a bit of a Night Stalker. I enjoy putting on my fangs, slipping into my bat costume, grabbing a quart of blood and my camera and wondering into the world of darkness.

This snapshot is something new I've been experimenting with. It was taken at about 12 midnight. I thought about entering in the contest but I don't think most people would realize that it is a night shot.

So... what are your rejects, "not ready for prime time reflections", and other wannabee reflects?

Apparently after 12 midnight I do have a few problems.... such as "wondering" and "wandering". I wonder when I wander?

Technique for the 1 or 2 people that might want to try this:

I shot in full manual mode with everything cranked to the max. Drop ISO as low as it will go, open F (aperture) as big as it will go, and set exposure for as long as it will go. Oh yea... and you need a tripod. :crazy:

On Edit: the other thing you crank to the max using this technique is the exposure compensation levels. Forgot that one. Kinda' important.

On Edit Edit: Remove any filter attached to the lens. You don't want anything reducing the amount of light coming into the camera. Damn. I'd make a horrible "teacher".

You do need an ambient or direct light source. Ideally a bright moon will work best but you'll need to play with the exposure times, but the other good light source is city ground lights and a cloudy night. The clouds will work as a light reflector. Below is my "light source"...

It does look like a painting. Where do you live that it is so bright at midnight?

I really wish I could use this pic but the goose's reflection got cut off. GRRRRR! So I used a boring pic instead.

6. Your entry is not boring

It communicates something that none of the other entries do. It is unique.

Did you get a new camera..... or are you using a different kind of fancy software gizmo thing? The photo above and your "bug" shots don't have the same feel to them as your previous photographs. The colors look different than photos you've shared in the past and the DOF in the bug pix.... jus' askin. Doesn't matter.

I have this one, which I did like you said, and it turned out kind of orange, too, but I fixed it with PaintShop.

The sense of depth just pulls you in. It is both surreal and natural. A work of Art. I hope you have that framed and on the wall somewhere in a place of import'.

7. Here are a couple from the same set as my entry

It was so dark at the wall that I had a really hard time focusing on anything. But, I kind of like the fuzzy look of the first one. Hubby stood really still for me...I believe this exposure took about 8 seconds could have been even longer. But I didn't pay attention due to the darkness and no flashlight. I just clicked and prayed these would come out.

10. yes...and at night it is a totally different experience

I like going to all the monuments at night...They are more surreal and you have time to reflect and even cry if you like. Where david is standing there are actually three names that belong to his family and mine...So this picture actually resonates with us. I will probably start a new thread of my pics from DC...Take a lot of batteries and film or cards...cause each trip I end up taking well over 500 pics. And don't forget a tripod. It's essential to get the night shots there.

14. I like the night also.

I took this one tonight, going for a "Night in the City" effect.
I was disappointed. The aluminum around the window and the glass blocks around the doorway sparkle and dance with color and motion... Totally lost in the still photo. I absolutely loved the softer diffused reflections in the aluminum, but the 4 sec exposure just blurred them all together. Oh Well.

I've saved it to my hard drive to use as a desktip image sometime in the future.

It reminds me of the photographr Wallace Nuttings' hand-colored artwork. Here's a piece of his called "Enticing Waters":

I like very much that you have attained a hand-tinted look to that shot. Very romantic image, very warm in a Victorian kind of way.

I, of course, am wating for payday at the end of the month to develop my vast collection of film rolls form my various trips accross Colorado this summer. I'll have at least one "not ready for prime time" reflection shot to post here at that time. :)

This was a nice double-deck catamaran holding about 300+ people. I really liked the way the people and water reflected off the shiny ceiling on the top deck.
