Looking for a site like Flickr for business listings, taggable, embeddable in HTML
Edited on Sat Jul-10-10 04:36 AM by michaeleric76
Hi guys. I found your forum via a Google search and thought I would create an account and ask my question to professionals here. So desirous am I to have it answered that I surmounted forms and donation requests and form fields incorrectly filled out and God know's what else to get to this point. I only donated $6, but I am not cheap. I am going to raise that dramatically to the requested $50 if you tell me which program to use and if I use it. I will donate even if you try to find something for me and I don't use it, which I will base on the perception of the effort that has gone into the answer which I seek. Now on to the point:

I have a furniture store and my third grade level of coding knowledge suddenly became evident and I became engulfed in a project for which there was no quick escape. Oh... I forgot to mention that the website is located at http://www.seattlehomecompany.com which you may visit if you wish for clarity in what I am looking to do. Now it doesn't look too bad, on my computer anyway. God help you if you aren't using Firefox 3.6 with a screen resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. Later, I found Yahoo's "Flickr" service the answer to all my needs, specifically:

  • photo hosting online

  • most important: tag assignment, where search results include code snippet to embed corresponding slide show into web page HTML code

  • I am willing to pay for the program if it is what I need

  • the reason flickr removed my account: it must be a program which can be used commercially where you may describe the product in the photo, along with a price.

  • The fact that I failed to realize that flickr was not for commercial use is a testament to my now proven stupidity, having lost all of my work, days of work, when suddenly someone reported me and my custom photos shamelessly displaying prices and sale prices. So completely and suddenly abolished was everything, the clear message of not wanting me there still stings, you know, phantom pains is how I explain it. Not even a simple "Were you confused when agreeing to the non-commercial use of your account? Well, its sad to be you today. Following which all my work was deleted, and people visiting my website suddenly had more questions than answers, specifically on what exactly I was selling and where could it be seen??

I am currently using both Picasa for a video and they do have slide show capability. I'm not sure if they have the tag feature where the results give you the snippet of precious code required so that any customer may want to know what if anything we sell that is blue, moderately affordable, and a sofa, and I could give her a URL code 15 minutes later after doing a tag search and importing code to my web server, and impressing the customer with a slide show where her answers could be viewed in what looks like a project that would take days to script. Oh, for slide shows I am also using Visual Lightbox, business edition, but I am annoyed that I cannot embed the slide show into the page without the impressive "zooming out and magnifying" effect.

Are you passionate about art (photography) and coding (ie Flash, Javascript, etc). Oh my. I just realized that I'm doomed. Those kind of people generally don't work together, let alone exist in the same body without some sort of multiple personality condition. Well, I'm not not going to press submit, I've come this far, so....

Thank you for both your time and effort in advance! If you didn't give of your time and effort, thanks should go to you, probably an artist in a forum for less technical questions, who undertook the task of reading this post while struggling not to fall out of your seat, Ab-Fab style, while simultaneously raising your hands for a nice dramatic element, shouting "Bored!", then hitting the floor pretending to have lost consciousness due to the fall, and by extension, to my nebulous request. If you specialize in coding, you probably are tired of reading all of this non-required drama dialogue and would give your right arm to just hit an "edit" button and simplify simplify simplify.

And... thank you for being you.

    Michael

    2. Never give up Michael,
I also don't have an answer for you, but there is a person I will ask later on today, and if some answer will come from that I'll be back and tell you.
Your post is amusing, your dilemma seems real.

I hope you are a good Democrat :)
    Welcome.

    3. I think that...
a website with the kind of commercial slide show you want is usually designed as part of the website rather than using a remote hosting site. The photo hosting sites are free because they want to sell something (prints, mugs, t-shirts, ads, etc) and are not interested in selling your furniture from which they get no cut.
Perhaps while waiting for a more technical answer here, you could look for some small store websites you like with slide shows and ask the webmaster what program they used. I'm a jewelry designer and I know that many jewelers, retail and wholesale, use slide shows. You might start there, or with some of the craft furniture makers who also have a need for a lot of photos.

    4. Welcome
If you don't find an answer here, I would consider asking this in the computer support group, and in the artists group here. There may be some computer support people that are familiar with websites and how to structure them with pictures--there are some web designers at DU. Whether they will see this request I don't know. Also some of the artists here have websites where they sell their work.

The above is the computer support group. I don't have the link to the artists' group handy.

    Good luck!
