The moon shot I'll never get.

I took at least 20 different shots of the last full moon. Different placement, bracketing from metered to -2 stops, still no one shot was what I "saw". Any shot with detail in the moon lost all discernible foreground elements. Any shot with a visible foreground frame rendered the moon as a featureless white ball. What you see above may be a composite but, it appears to be the only way I can have both.

Probably any moon shot with the sky that dark would be the same..........the need to combine shots to get it just right.


That full harvest moon was just fabulous and this composite really captures it.


Sometime I am going to try to get a photo of the full moon rising on the Duck River overlook, much to the consternation of my husband, who thinks the woods are filled with meth dealers. A cloudy afternoon saved the day for him when I last planned to go. I warned him that I would be paying attention to moon stages in the future (now that I know about the M setting).

3. The dynamic range of the human eye...

... is far better than any digital camera's. You could try gradient neutral density filters to lower the brightness of the moon. However, there is nothing wrong with the composite either.
