bird identification

I know this is a photography group and not a birding group but... this guy was lost this morning when I took my son to the metro station in Yonkers. He appeared not to be able to fly so I brought him back to my room... any ideas about what he is... I assumed he was a common finch but I can't find him online...

1. Well, I surely would not know,

all I know about them is if they have color, wings, and chirp then they are birds.

I'm responding because this makes me miss Maestro (Celebration probably will know your answer)
and the last time he was around he was "not well and happy".

I wonder whazzup with him?

2. I was thinking of Celebration

when I posted it...

at present my little friend is eating crumbs off my plate and HE CAN FLY... funny, he got on my hand at the train station and just sat there the entire ride back to the hotel and then when I made a nice cozy box for him and sat him in it, he proceeded to fly out and has been exploring everycorner of the place here

9. It is a Golden Crowned Kinglet. You are fortunate to see one

They are so small and tend to stay hidden in trees. I've only seen one kinglet, the Ruby Crowned Kinglet.

There will be regional differences, but I'm pretty sure I am right on this.

On edit: Kinglets flick their wings. That is one identifying behavior.

I had checked yellow crowned sparrow and another kinglet but hadn't found him... he is on my cup, drinking my tea right now. He is extremely friendly and curious. I played the sound track from the Cornell site and he loved it! I am going to call the Bronx Zoo and ask the best place to release him ;( he already feels like one of the family

You might have been thinking of the White Throated Sparrow. They have a beautiful song.

her name is Martha... but she doesn't stay still enough to ever get any needlepoint done! as I type this she is flying from my head to the top of my laptop to my cup of tea... Hope I can get one good clear picture of her before she leaves me

I'm pretty bad at bird ID, but your guess sounds reasonable re: finch.

Somewhere I have a bird book and will look to see if it turns up.

but I have no clue.

It is not really a good thing to keep a wild bird if you aren't trained. You might want to see if there is a wild bird rescue near you that can take him. Or he could be an escaped pet bird. Forgot there are pet finches too. Either way try grabbing some pet finch food (and a small cage) from a pet store to feed the little guy until you decide what to do.



Obviously not much help here beyond the food/cage bit.

13. Taking a second look gave me an idea of the size of the bird.

I didn't notice the freewheel behind her at first. The size led me to think Kinglet.
