The Photo Trip From Hell...
No, it's nothing that happened to me. But Kevin McNeal, a noted photographer from this area, recounts his autumn foliage trip to New England and Canada here.

Think of it as a cautionary tale for those of us who wish we had the resources to just take off on a photo shoot to whichever part of the world is most interesting for months on end. There's something to be said about only shooting locations a day's drive away...

1. This poor man. I read every word with mounting disbelief - thinking he could
have made the trip to come home with only the tales of woe for a brilliant short story. It's an incredible tale of how one mishap can lead to another when you are discombobulated.

Then I looked at the photos.
Oh my.
It's time to learn how to really take pictures.

6. A belated follow-up...
Kevin has posted what appear to be some of the actual photos from the trip -- check out the first twelve shots here.

Let's just say I'd be quite willing to endure some of what he went through, if I could get such shots.

9. Thought I had a rough week.
Mine was golden, compared to his.

Damn, he does take good pics, tho.

10. Thank you for the resurrection of this with GIFTS.
Oh. My. God.
I agree with you, and might consider taking on the parts you don't want to endure, and then we could flip for the photos.

:)

Why didn't he buy a disposable cellphone?

4. That came up in the comments...
He apparently never realized they exist. Of course, I haven't been to New England in decades -- while, around here, you would only need to stop by a 7-11 to get a pre-paid cell, I don't even know if they have 7-11s there (they didn't when I was living in Massachusetts and Vermont). And the best areas for fall foliage have a definite shortage of "big-box" stores within a drive of an hour or two.

3. Ooof.
That was pretty crazy. I also wonder why he didn't get some money wired to him.
Travel is intense, especially on a shoe-string budget. I almost always end up in at least one super challenging situation a trip. I've slept in the middle of a roundabout in Italy, got arrested for not having proper change for a bus, arrived in a town in Mexico at 2am and everything was closed, had close encounters with deadly reptiles, whew, it goes on and on. I wouldn't trade it for anything though.

8. I hear ya! Had a passport stolen on a trip to Romania a few years back
it was only the honesty of a local that kept that from turning into a hassle of unbeleivable proportions.

Even then, the local cops demanded $100 in "crisp, clean bills" before they would return iIt did beat a train ride of questionable security from western to eastern Romania during a January when the winter was the coldest in a century.
