Train Travel - spending a half hour this AM at a train station in High Point NC

I shot them in the colors indicated, no conversion.
I learned that this train goes all the way to NYCity!

The number of passengers getting on was about 10, and there was no coffee available in the pictured one room station - and none available in walking distance from the train station.
I asked.

I love the feel of Old Americana, but what an amazing statement this makes to me who is used to European train stations that are as commercial as Airports.

3. The railroads need to survive. They are so much more
energy efficient than autos.

I'm from a railroad family.

I worked at the L&N terminal in Louisville.

4. I really like your photos - they give me the idea
that there ought to be a photo journey made across the country to document the stations and the conditions.
As a European I am appalled at the lack of train travel possibilities, the lack of amenities at the stripped down stations, the foolishness of not having a developed network of high speed trains across the vast country. As an American I am enchanted at the left over art deco or earlier magnificence as shown in our two shots of the interior of the two stations.

When I first immigrated my town had a train station. I took the train to New York City as a twenty year old, hung out for the weekend, came back Mo mornings in time to go to work.
There were gunshot holes at times in the body of the train. Outside and inside.
What a country.

5. The auto and the oil lobbies killed the railroads. The
interstate highways put the nail in the coffin.

The rugged individualism myth was swallowed hook line and sinker. Only the lower class took the bus or rode the train. You were suspect if you were walking, thought a dimwit if you rode a bicycle. I remember walking past cars waiting at a stop light. I could hear the door locks clicking as I approached.

Now us rugged individuals have become slaves to the oil giants, and a ride on a train means an 80 mile one way trip by car to the nearest station, and a 4 AM departure two weeks from now.

6. I'm figuring that's the Silver Star coming in, right?
I've taken the Silver Meteor from Savannah to NYC a couple of times. Wouldn't trade those trips for anything. Train travel rocks.

7. Calls itself the Crescent
Goes from New Orleans to New York City.
I am tempted to ride it on down to NOLA, see what it looks like these days, and take some pictures.
Maybe I'll start saving up for it.
