Just flipped the calendar page to HappyCynic's "The Wedge" building
for July.
It made me think that we never managed to work up a way to continue our calendar contribution to DU.
When last we talked about it there was the suggestion to use the winners from the contests.
I forget why that did not fly, I thought it was a great idea.

I remember saying I would assist, but did not have enough computer knowledge to lead the effort.

Since it's back on my mind I thought I'd throw it out again for possible comment(s).

1. just a question
Why does it take so much computer knowledge? There are tons of places where you can order photo calendars, and all you have to do is upload the photos to a website, I think.

2. When I observed what Blueraven did, the work of preparing the
submissions for the decisions and votes seemed overwhelming. If I said computer knowledge I also meant computer work and time at the computer.
She had to use sites I was utterly unfamiliar with for the voting, and they were also overwhelming looking.
I work full time still, when I have jobs and am often deadlined, and did not want to learn new stuff plus do the work.

She bowed out because of the preparatory work interfering too much with her studies schedule.
I believed her, especially since nobody stepped forward to even offer as much as I did, which was assistance.

I agree with you that once the photos are determined the upload and order is probably easy.

3. how many calendars sell?
Does DU make any money on them? That might help determine if it is worth it.

I haven't ever entered the calendar contest because I couldn't figure out the rules. But I still don't know why it had to be so complicated.

I'm probably not a good candidate to be in charge since I had problems just submitting a photo.

It's okay with me whatever the group decides. Thank you for starting the topic. Maybe someone else will have some thoughts on this.

4. Thanks for taking it seriously. I love my calendar, it's beside my laptop
and I enjoy my photo friends nearby all year. My Mom today said she hated turning to July because June was my photo, and when I told her it's possibly the last calendar she was really upset. So I told her I'd see if I can get some interest.

One old resident in this forum knows lots on the topic, and i think the idea of the winners of the contests might have been hers - CC.
I will ask her opinion.

5. that would make it easier
I guess the only downside would be having some people that won more than once during the year. Would they have more than one photo in it? I wouldn't care but just trying to think of possible issues. Hopefully some others here will chime in.

6. The idea of contest photos
was my idea. Actually I've always thought that was the easiest way to do it. Thing is you really need to give warning before hand in the contest. Some people might not want their photos in a calendar and well it could get difficult. I think Blueraven had something she was thinking of doing. Since she has not only worked so hard on doing them, she was the person that took an idea and made it happen I leave any determination up to her. Without her there most likely never would of been a calendar.

I don't think Skinner ever added to the cost of the calendar so don't think DU has made anything off them. That is going by faulty memory so I could be wrong.

7. Mira, it looks like nobody wants to volunteer for this
I think that is why people aren't really discussing this that much. If you want a calendar, I suggest you volunteer to be in charge and start a poll. I promise to vote yes for the calendar in that poll, and to purchase one if it comes about. I don't think that it is the concept of a calendar that has people quiet here...........I think they just don't want to be in charge.

8. I like your directness. I think your observations are on target.
Now that I realize the lack of interest in participating or even discussing it amongst ourselves
and
now that I know DU has chosen not to make money on this product
I can let it go.

In my business I have long reached a point when a customer gives me the "can you do it for less, little lady" routine I look at them and say: "I don't do this for practice. And if I don't make money I would prefer to sit, watch a movie and knit."

Our calendars were wonderful to me.
But without a profit to DU, and without a fire in our belly to produce it and make it a fund raiser, I don't need to fret about it.

Thanks for gently setting me straight.
