I've always believed that if it sounds too good to be true, it is. Some online companies are offering this camera for as low as $600. The camera usually sells for around $1099. So what am I missing here?

1. I did some online searching
They are all scams. You get what you pay for.

Or they'll try to break up the pieces that you're supposed to get in the box and sell them as extras.

3. Run the shop/site through here:
http://www.ResellerRatings.com/

The most common scam is to sell you all the parts that come in the box at separate prices.

4. Scam
I called one of these places once and they said at that price (at the time it was a Nikon D40 for $250) you just get a plastic lens from China and it would take 90 days to ship...then spin then was "...you can add a glass lens for $xxx.xx and have it tomorrow...." lol. Don't trust them ;)

5. Such pricing is often suspect. However, when I worked for Olympus
they had a policy of not repairing warranty returns for the first year or so. Instead they sent a new replacement and did an autopsy on the return. That way they could make production line changes to correct problems. Then they refurbished the product and offered it to employees and camera store personnel for up to 75% discount. Back then they called it "class two merchandise". Now they sell it through select outlets and label it "refurbished" with special packaging to make it obvious. No where near 75% but 30-40% discounts. Only down side is a 90 day warranty instead of 1 year.

I have no concerns about buying refurbished Oly stuff. My 620 is a refurb.

I can't speak for Nikon but I suspect they have a similar program.

If it is refurb it will be clearly marked.
