Hack your Canon point and shoot camera...
This was posted about back in 2008, but I think it may have gotten better since than
and more cameras supported.

Boot your Canon point and shoot camera to extra firmware that allows a lot more functions.
I have done it with mine and I think it is great. Especially like the raw format, extended
iso, shutter speeds, aperture, remote shutter release.

2. A Canon salesman told me...
that the same chip is used in all their cameras and the software limits each camera to it's ability given the restrictions in lenses and controls. They don't want someone thinking they can get a professional shot with a P&S that may not be able to handle the lighting.
