Help! my Kodak Digital died - maybe.
Kodak Easy Share DX7440. Tried to take a pix and get error msg. "Camera error #E45 See Users Guide. Ok, says a few things and easy one was charge batter. Ok, did that still no worky. Check online for solutions - pffffft.

O and when I turn it off the lens will not retract either.

Tell hubby camera needs to be fixed. Man no nothing about anything says, 'buy a new one it's cheaper than getting it fixed'. That's NOT the point!! I'm sick of this disposable society, it's criminal. I've had the camera for about 5 or 6 years BUT, I haven't used it to death, it took great pics and was simple - like me. LOL

If I can't get it fixed or it's too much money, I need some suggestions for a replacement. Keeping in mind I use my camera mostly for family, holidays, the dog (a lot of the dog :) Nothing with too many bells and whistles either - I'm technologically challenged. Oh, and I guess I can kiss my Easy Share printer good-bye, too. :( Grrrrr.

Any help would be much appreciated. <3 Thank you

3. Wow, thank you.
I've read it but, want to read it a few more times before I try. Sounds exactly like my problem but, I didn't drop my camera I can imagine who did. Grrrr.

Got nothing to lose at this point. Thank you so much HappyCynic for taking the to find this for me.

7. Almost worked, lol
Hubby said, they're so cheap get a new one. I went on a rant about 'our thowaway society'. Everything today is made to break. in '99 bought a fixer upper house. The stove was still working - built 1949 and the Fridgeidare was at least thirty years old. The style that people turn into beer keg holders now.

I'm looking at other Kodak Easy Shares at Target and Best Buy, so I can at least keep the Easy Share photo printer. That's a waste because the for the cost of the ink I can have a million pix printed online or various drug stores. Saw a few for a little over 100.00 12 & 14 pixels and 5x zoom. Nice colors, too. But, it still pisses me off.

I was raised by a Mom who lived through the Depression. She wouldn't throw away a piece of clothing without taking off the buttons or zippers and if she could she make something out of whatever was left she did. Way off topic - thank you for your time, patience and consideration. I love the people on DU. Big

I'm a bit stubborn - may give it another try tomorrow, lol.

2. It's a farily common problem with older digital compacts
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 02:18 PM by postatomic
I bought an Olympus that had this problem and I disassembled it and fixed it. At this point you have nothing to lose (since a repair cost would be more than the camera is worth): try pushing the lens back in manually.

I've purchased a few Kodak cameras at thrift stores. They are good digital compact cameras.

Kodak DX3700 (paid $9.00) (this only had 18 pictures taken with it and they were still in the internal memory)

Kodak Z650 (paid $12.00)

The Z650 is on loan now. Only thing I had to do was come up with a camera strap (I buy old luggage ((edited to add old bags)) at thrift stores and use the straps)

Good luck.
:hi:

4. Two great replies
Thank you. Excellent pics! If the fix method HappyCynic found doesn't work I'm going to the pawn shop in the next town and check them out. I feel terrible about it - someone needed the money and had to give up something for peanuts. Guilt may interfere with this transaction. Thank you

5. Your words about guilt remind me of a friend, she had lots of self earned money, and when I
modeled my 8 $ Goodwill coat for her she got mad as hell and said: You should leave these bargains for poor people to buy.

It took a good while to convince her that donating is only one way to help Goodwill. They have five stores here in town in order to make money SELLING the stuff.

I have bought a camera on E-bay successfully. And on Amazon. Try Craig's list.
The pawn shop is a local industry, they will always be in business not unlike prostitution, and they also need to sell the stuff.

Good luck, Madmax. When you find something on line, run it by the pros in this forum.

6. Not a Pawn Shop. Thrift store as in Goodwill, ARC, Savers
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 10:34 PM by postatomic
Items are donated and the thrift store sells them. Money goes to a number of good community causes, the best of which it helps employ people. The first Kodak I posted a pic from had pictures taken at Christmas in the memory. They probably got it as a Xmas Gift, took a few pics, but then never used it for one reason or another. I've never bought anything at a Pawn Shop.

My SO and I go quite frequently. I call it 'Good Will Hunting'. It's a very 'green' way of shopping. You are recycling or repurposing items. It's all good.

You can also check out shopgoodwill.com

On Edit: I realize I wrote "it's on loan". You wouldn't know why I wrote that. I loan and gift cameras, books, and misc photography stuff to young kids starting out in photography.

9. Ok, that works for me
Today I decided no one in my family needs another damn sweater or game or anything this year. I'm donating money in their names to the local food bank, ASPCA, and American War Vets. If they're not happy - Frak'em. :)
