Poll question: Does Loner=High IQ?

I've been curious about this for awhile.

If you know your IQ please participate, so I may reach some very unscientific conclusions with this very unscientific poll.

1. Feel bad no one has answered your poll

I'm not sure if it equates to intelligence or not. I do know that the interests I have developed or can talk passionately about seem to be very different than the typical chit chat that seems to consume most people's daily "talk." As a result, I often feel a little alienated from others. It's not that I don't care about them, I do, but it causes me to sometimes wonder if they care the same about me since they are not as interested in these subjects as me. :shrug:

I've always hated it too. My family says it makes it hard for me to relate to "normal" people. I guess it could be partially to blame, but I don't see how it can totally be to blame. It depresses me. For years, I did as many drugs and drank as much alcohol as I possibly could to try to "kill brain cells." Now, my memory is bad, but the IQ hasn't changed. Wish I had know that way back when. My short term memory would be nice to have now.

4. Here's a fact:

The intellectually gifted population often has trouble socially and psychologically.

I'm a teacher. I took extra certification in gifted ed from UCSD, which included a semester of going through case studies and statistics.

Intellectually "gifted" individuals often suffer from asynchronous development: intellectually advanced, socially/emotionally behind the curve. That, plus the plain fact that they don't fit well socially with people that can't relate to the way they think, put them at risk for lifelong social/emotional problems.

Just as you describe.

8. Well it's certainly not equals.

There are people with high IQs that are not loners. Richard Feynman comes to mind. On the other hand, high IQ is likely to push you outside the mainstream of human society, almost by definition. It's hard to be different (two sigmas out on the intelligence scale) without being different.

9. Probably.

I think that loneliness may exist at both extremes of the IQ spectrum, with less of it in the middle. This is probably because the average people relate to their peers better than the few people at top and bottom.

No doubt there are other ways in which being "outside the normal range" would correlate with difficulties of "social adjustment" of one sort of another. Cultures are normative systems and they put a heavy premium on conformity and "fitting in".

14. My results have always varied from 136 to 141 depending on the exact test.

Like some of the other people upthread, sometimes I hate it.

It's way too much to try and explain here and now, but let's just say my development was anything but smooth. :(
