UGH! I have to "pick a partner" for a final project for a class
It's a web design class and we're supposed to design a website for a business. I can't see how this is going to work because
the school is too cheap to give us a server for PHP, so we've had to get our own web space that does. Since the free ones limit you so badly, I pay a small monthly fee for a domain name for the class. I'm not enthused about giving someone my password to help me work on a website. It's a distance ed class, so that makes it even worse.

I've had really bad experiences working in groups. usually someone does all the work and the other person coasts. I don't want to be either one, nor do I want to be responsible for someone else's grade or have to worry about someone being responsible for mine. I don't expect anyone to find me a solution, I just wanted to vent.

1. Let me pick up on your rant
As I had to take my employer aside and explain that 'Team Work' does not mean everyone having their two-cents worth at every stage of every project rather than the team being a series of modules, each responsible for their own part of the process.

2. The phenomenon you describe is way too familiar.
I ended up being the guy doing the work way too many times.

3. Same here, I loathe having to work in groups like that.....
I often times asked the teacher if I could work alone but 9 times out of 10 they said I HAD to find a partner(s). Like you I've had numerous bad experiences working in groups/pairs, nearly every time I could have done better on my own. They've all been the same, usually one person (me) ends up doing all the work while the other just sits around and stares into space. Having to worry about someone else's grade sucks and I wouldn't want someone to have to be responsible for mine either.

Not only that but a lot of times the teacher is the one who paired everyone up and you always get paired up with someone you don't know at all and just have to cope.

4. Sorry I never updated...
I did pitch a little fit about this (and it turns out others had concerns too, but were afraid to voice them) and we were given the choice of whether or not to work in a group. So I DID get to do my project on my own. The average grade given was 75, but I got a 99. I'm glad for once I didn't keep quiet.
This was the final result (however I did take out the forms and Paypal that was there at the time, since none of it was for sale):
