3. 1) I never run out of gesso
2) The traditional underlayment for working in oil is rabbit skin glue over which is applied lead white -- needless to say, this is no longer PC

3) Latex house paint, as mentioned above (any light color really), can be used but is not recommended simply because, relative to a good quality gesso, it will break down with age. Of course by "age" here, we're talking over fifty years.

What medium will you be using to execute the painting? That could make a difference.

I work in oil, acrylic and mixed media (by which I mean just about anything that comes to hand from house paint to lipstick to crayon) on paper, canvas, aluminum, wood and corrugated card board. I've been playing with 'paint' (which I define as any liquid or semi-liquid medium which binds pigment -- which can be anything from dirt and ground charcoal to the more refined particulate matter -- to a surface) since mud-pie days.

I know, but I kind of like the smell of rabbitskin glue all cooked up, warm and bubbly.
