How I "debunk" political hate emails (99.9% of which are from rightwingers)
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 08:08 AM by SHRED
1. Highlight a unique section of the text, a couple of sentences or so.
2. Copy text.
3. Paste text into Google search window.
4. Search.
5. Notice all the "urban legend" references.
6. Check them out.

ON EDIT:
I actually have never seen one from a leftwinger.

1. Absolutely
I usually search for the title of the e-mail with the word "hoax".

Don't forget the follow-through :)

Include the link with instructions on how to "do it yourself" (I always add that it took me about 15 seconds to debunk the propaganda -- and be sure to call it propaganda)
Delete the original e-mail

I have found it only takes me one or twice before the sender either stops propagating or at least removes my address from their e-mail list.

2. I do that too.
But here's the first thing I try:

Go to Snopes

http://www.snopes.com/

Copy a few of the words from the liemail in question, picking something relatively unique. Paste that into the Snopes search window and hit it. This works pretty often.

Snopes has done something to their website so you (or at least I) can't copy their text to paste into a rebuttal. You can defeat this if you print to a file. For this I use Microsoft's XPS Document Writer for this. Then I save the file and copy from that.

We'd better get ready, boys and girls. The Reich wing media and the GOP liemail circuit are already gearing up for the General election campaign.

3. I do that also, however once when I responded back stating it was
BS, the person said "I don't care if it's not true, I like it away".....lol, that's the mentality of the right wing freaks.... they don't even care if it's true or not.

Sometimes, they even put in the email...verified by snopes. But when I check to make sure....they're lying...it's still BS.

4. I've encountered this too
or worse, the people are so brainwashed with the "Liberal media" meme that they will just say your sources are somehow all biased. It really boggles the mind sometimes the lengths people will go to to avoid thinking about something.
