False: Obama's Step-Grandmother Sarah Said He was Born in Kenya

An examination of the taped interview with Obama’s African step-grandmother was performed by Dead Sea Scrolls scholar Gregory Doudna:

The full tape transcription makes clear that this phone conversation has not been represented accurately. There never was a statement by Sarah Obama at any point in this phone call saying or intending to say that Barack Obama Jr. was born in Kenya. Sarah Obama herself said that Obama was born in Hawaii and never said differently. There was a confusion over the meaning of where Mrs. Obama was “present” when Obama was born in Hawaii, but not over whether Obama was born in Hawaii.

Following from transcript; this the part of the interview left off by Birthers, including in lawsuits:

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE (to McRae): No! Obama was not born in Mombasa! He was born in America!

MCRAE: Wh-whereabouts, whereabouts was he born? I, I thought he was born in Kenya.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: No he was born in America, not in Mombasa.

MCRAE: OK. Do you know whereabouts he was born?

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: (Pause.) Huh?

MCRAE: Do you know where he was born? I thought he was born in Kenya. I was gonna go by and see where he was born.

(two male voices in background in foreign language speaking at the same time. Mrs. Obama or another woman in background.)

VOICE (background): It was Hawaii.

VOICE OF MRS. OBAMA OR ANOTHER WOMAN (background): Hawaii.

BROTHER TOM (background): Hawaii, yeah?

VOICE OF MRS. OBAMA OR ANOTHER WOMAN (background): Yeah.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE (background): Yes.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE (to McRae): Sir, she says he was born in Hawaii.

MCRAE: OK.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: Yeah, in 1960 this was Hawaii, where his father, his father was also marrying there. This was Hawaii.

MCRAE: OK.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: Yeah.

MCRAE: Was, was, was Mrs. Obama, was sh--was she present? Was, was Mrs. Obama, see I thought you said she was present. Was she, was, was she, was she able to see him being, being born in, in Hawaii?

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: (pause, silence) Hoh? (pause) Uh, yeah would you please pronounce?

MCRAE: OK I’m sorry. I, I thought she said she was present when he was born. I was—

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE (sounding exasperated): No, no! The, the woman was not present. She was uh not, a what--you see, she was here in Kenya, and Obama was born in America. That is, that’s obvious.

MCRAE: OK.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: Because, because the grandmother was married here in Kenya, and Obama was born in America, oh yeah, so his son, the little Obama, was marrying, was marrying, in America, in United States.

MCRAE: Oh, OK, fine. I mean, I--I just, I misunderstood what she was saying. I thought you said she was present when he was born.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: No, not present there. The present with me here was tonight. Not present so she can leave. No she was here in Kenya while he, uh, her son, the little Obama, was marrying in America. And, uh, he be present if it--

WOMAN'S VOICE (background): It was in Hawaii.

TRANSLATOR OGOMBE: --was in America there, why are they for, they go, they go, they go to some place, then the present isn't here sir, he was born there in America.

MCRAE: OK. Well tell, tell her I would like to come by and see her when I am there in December. I would love to, uh, meet her personally and pray with her.

2. Coast Province General Hospital, Mombasa, Statement

"SHOCKING CHARGE: OBAMA PRESIDENCY ILLEGAL!"

Officials at the hospital confirm they've been besieged with requests for information on Obama's birth but haven't been able to find any record of it.

"We do not have computerized records going back to the 1960's and can only sort through our archives by hand," Dr. Christopher Mwanga, an administrator at the Mombasa hospital tells GLOBE. "We have searched for all the names of babies born on Aug. 4, 1961, and have not found the name of Barack Hussein Obama. That is all I can tell you."

"We can neither prove that he was born here nor disprove it."

3. Fake Kenyan Birth Certificate: Statement by Prime Minister's Office

We e-mailed the purported Kenyan birth certificate to Salim Lone, spokesman for Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, to see what he thought.

Here was his three-sentence reply: "It's a forgery. Kenya only became a Republic in December, 1964. Other arguments could also be marshaled, but they are not needed."

4. Kenyan Journalist: Obama Was Not Born In Mombasa, Kenya

The Post & Email, which appears to be a conservative site, has an interview with Kenyan journalist and author Leo Odera Omolo, who was a close friend of the President’s father. John Charlton does a refreshing job of bringing out truth, rather than agenda, from the enduring confusion cast over what Obama’s step-grandmother Sarah actually said about his location of birth.

Here are some pertinent snips where Omolo sets out his personal knowledge of events:

I have taken a very keen interest and have carefully listened to the interview. The voice is truly of the of Mama Sarah Hussein Obama, although her interpreter was not doing a perfect job in correctly translating her words into English. The interviewing Bishop, too was wrong for having offered to bring Mama Sarah a copy of the Bible, and yet Mama Sarah is professing Muslim faith. He perhaps irritated her towards the end of the interview. The Bishop, again, appears to have some preconceived ideas that Barack Obama jnr, the US President, was born in the Kenya’s coastal City of Mombasa, as some mischievous writings (claim), which have appeared in the US. papers and websites.

Take from me. I was born on July 21,1937 whereas Barrack Obama Snr was born a year ealier in 1936, but because of my huge stature, we were almost of the same size. I knew all his background pretty well. His son who is 44th US President was born in Hawaii and not Kenya, and whoever is saying he was born in Mombasa is making fraudulent claims for some unclear motives only known to himself. Do not shy away from asking me more (questions). OK? …

From the script you posted to me and according to my understanding of both the Dho-Luo vernacular and Kiswaili, Mama Sarah Obama was being pinned down with the question whether she herself was present—where—and the place where the boy was born. She replied in affirmative, that she was’nt there herself because she happen to be in Mombasa at the material time, whereas the little baby grandson was born in Hawaii in the United States of America, therefore she could not have been there to witness his birth. Thus us what the script is telling. The same as I know the history of the family, there is nothing that can connect his birth to Mombasa. …

Sir, the family of the late Hussein Onytango Obama are devout Muslims and so is the family of Sarah Obama. Half of the sons of the late Mr. Abdo Omari, Sarah’s father, live at Kendu-Bay, while half of the family members are living in Mombasa, a Swahili coastal town whose inhabitant are the Muslim.

It was her husband, Hussein Onyango Obama, who received the telegram message from his son Barrack Obama snr, from Hawaii, announcing the birth of a bouncing baby son, who Barrack was found of calling “the Big Bull”, and who is the now US President. In turn, Hussein Onyango called his wife Sarah in Mombasa and to break the good news from Hawaii in the US. And that is how Sarah came to know about the new baby. …

In this context, you now know that Barrack Obama snr, could not have been in Kenya nor his late wife Ann. All of them were in the US. I hope this now clarifies the mischievous report of Barrak Obama Jnr being born in Mombasa, which is to my knowledge is a far fetched story hatched by some invisible enemies to derail his election victory, and which must now be discarded by all sane persons and be treated with the contempt it deserves.
