Naruto got licensed
AoE will continue to fansub until they get a S&D order. And if the license holder doesn't turn out a descent sub at a descent price they may continue underground.

Naruto is a ninja. Well to be precise he starts off as a ninja in training. The series is set in an alternate world. Ninja's form the basis of the military power of the nations involved. Each nation has a village that trains and provides the ninja force for its defense.

So back to Naruto. Naruto has a history that sets him apart from the other students. It seems that on the day he was born the village was involved with a life or death struggle with a demon fox. More of a king of demons, this one was particularly tough and nasty and it was only by sealing the fox away that they were able to win the battle. Unfortunately for Naruto it was him they sealed the fox in.

The parents of the villaged agreed to keep Naruto's condition secret so he might live a normal life. But they still feared him. Thus their children picked up on this fear and found Naruto (orphaned during the attack) an easy target.

As a result Naruto has lead a rather miserable life. But he refuses to let this get to him and has vowed to make everyone in the village recognise him as a great ninja (despite his seeming inability). This is where the series starts.

Naruto has been compared to Dragon Ball Z only better. It has a much more well crafted plot and character development. You really come to care about each of the main characters and they spend time developing the side characters as well. The plot continues to grow and change in unexpectedly intelligent ways.

Parental advisorty: There is death of major characters in the series. There is violence (they are ninjas).

All in all this is our favorite series currently playing in Japan. Samurai Champloo is very interesting but doesn't have the depth of this series.

3. Sounds interesting
Champloo is stylish, but the characters are very stereotypical and seem to glorify the current Japanese street-thug ideals. You're right, it does lack depth.

I'll be sure to check Naruto out.
