Someone in this folder mentioned melamine paint for counters....

Where did you buy it?

Lowe's does not carry it, Sherwin Williams does not carry it, Ace does not carry it.

I have some bookcases I want to paint but latex isn't going to cut it.

Help!!

1. I've had excellent luck with Sherwin Williams

They sold me a (kinda pricey) primer meant specifically to go over shiny, non-paint-friendly surfaces. I don't recall the product's name, but if you say you want to paint over plastic or melamine, this woud be the stuff they'll sell you. Once primed, you can top coat with anything.

This primer was the key to success and it is worth every cent we paid for it. Forget about Home Depot or Lowes. Go to a Sherwin Williams store. You won't regret it.

We painted some bathroom cabinets that were that horrible gloss formica from the 60's and 70's. In yet another bath, this one in the basement, we painted the melamine paneling on the walls. In the case of the cabinets, we used an acrylic enamel topcoat and the result is as hard as nailpolish ... and just as glossy. Which we wanted. We used standard latex wall paint on the other bathroom's walls.

2. Sherwin Williams does not carry it here.

Ack!!!!!!! They just look at me like I'm insane when I ask for something to go on melamine here.

I'll try another SW.... there's one in another town where it is less likely that the counter help has been sniffing the enamel and smoking pot out the back door.... (The problem with boulder's tolerance is that it can be a little too tolerant of stupidity.)

3. The word 'melamine' will throw them off course ... instead ....

.... just ask for a primer that will stick to hard to paint surfaces ... like glass and (generic) plastic. That's the stuff ya want.
