Can I paint a teak storage chest?

When we bought our house, we inherited a large teak storage chest for our lanai. It has never been properly taken care of. The teak is faded and has mildew stains on it. It never took on the gray coloring it should have. The chest is structurally sound but really ugly because of the discolorations. If I thoroughly prime it, can I paint it to match the lanai?

1. have you sanded it down throughly? let it start over? with mildew

i'd be worried about painting it anyway.....

2. I have sanded the mildew stains and most of them came off.

The thing just looks awful. I have never really liked it, and to be perfectly honest, I've never liked the look of greyed teak, my lanai is all beige as is my patio furniture so the grey won't go. It stores our pool floats, etc. At this point, I am ready to toss it, I just thought that if I could paint it to match the lanai walls, it might last for another season or two before we have to replace it.

3. well then a good coat of Kilz should do it I'd think. it may really suck

up the paint though, but if you're only keeping it for a couple more years anyway, what do you have to lose?
