Greenboard is illegal for new construction in three days

Heads up, DUers: the International Residential Code, which is accepted in 34 states, will not recognize moisture resistant drywall (aka "greenboard") for use in wet areas as of January 1, 2006. They claim that the paper is the "perfect food" for mold and the gypsum breaks down when you get the board wet.

The code specifies 1/2" cement board impregnated with mold inhibitor, which is now used as tile backer, as the replacement for greenboard.

1. good to know as I am doing a complete bathroom tear out and

would need to have the original board replaced ...which dates to the late 60's...

2. i used cement board in a tile repair in our master bath

it was surprisingly easy to work with so no worries

very easy to work with, you just need a good drill.

5. Cement board is waaaaay better than greenboard ever thought about being!

And its easy to work with. And best of all, tile sticks to it better than any sort of smooth face board.
