Ceramic tiling question
I need to put one row of tiles in to match what's currently on the kitchen backsplash. The current tiles were actually placed over older tiles which add an extra 1/8" or so. I need to put something on the bare to add the new row of tiles, but I am unsure of what. The thinnest backboard is 1/4" which would make the new row stick out more. Can I used add more mortar to build up for the new row of tiles? Or can I use a thin sheet of wood?

Please don't tell me to redo all the tile. I'm growing weary of this project :-(

1. Redoing the tile is the best bet, of course
but you might be able to find Masonite thin enough to work getting the tile reasonably level. Ask one of the hardware store guys about it. Since it's only one row of tile, you can get away with a lot more than you could with a whole wall of it. Just make sure it's well anchored to the wall, or the weight of tile and mastic will pull it down in record time.

New tile never seems to match old tile, though, so when the whole business fails in a few years it may come as a relief. By then you may be ready to grit your teeth and do the whole rotten job.

2. Masonite is a good idea........
you can also try FRP. Like Warpy says though make sure it is well secured or it will all fall off.

FRP= Fiberglass Reinforced Panel. You can get it at any Major construction supply warehouse.

3. Use a thick-set mastic instead of a thin-set.
If the difference is only 1/8" or so, then I think you can just use a thicker bed.
