It's done.
We finished demoing the bathroom today. Oh. My. God. was there a lot of cement. But we sledgehammered it, hauled every last scrap out to the dumpster, then pried the metal lathe off the walls and floor bit by bit. And as an extra bonus, I discovered that the sub flooring wasn't nailed down by almost falling through it! I was prying up the lathe on the floor, then pushing it ahead of me and several boards came up with the lathe. Teeter, teeter! I guess that is why contractors need os much insurance!

Anyway, it is done and I am happy. :)

3. Now you can discover the beauty of cement board
as an underlayment for tile. Lath sucks, whether it's wood or metal.

5. Yeah, but first I need to figure out how to get the cast iron tub
from hell out. It is very heavy. I am going to buy a bigger sledgehammer and try wailing on it later in the week, see if I can break it up into bits, carry it out that way.

Then we can finally get to actually building. Looking forward to the cement board :)

6. that's not gonna work
it will dent your sledgehammer and annoy the tub

can you get it on a furniture dolly? you can rent them I know but I just can't imagine you being able to break up cast iron with out a torch

8. You CAN break a cast-iron tub with a sledge.
http://wiki.ehow.com/Remove-Cast-Iron-Tub

WEAR GOGGLES!! that porcelain coating is nasty stuff.

I've never done it but I've seen it done at my parents house.

I HAVE tried to move one of those bad mo fos...it ain't fun. I had a Kohler cast-iron whirlpool tub delivered to my condo and they left it at the curb for me. I figured I along with three of my strapping friends could carry it up three flights of stairs. Boy were we wrong. We could barely budge it. Luckily, someone was moving in down the street and I was able to hire their movers for 20 minutes work for a hundred bucks. Even the pros had a hard time. I thought they were going to break through the railing of my back porch. talk about grunting and groaning. Yikes.

10. I cracked it with the little sledge.
I am getting a bigger one, then give it another go. According to my "Creative Homeowner" book, this should work.

9. The tub is already tres annoyed.
I *did* manage to crack it a bit with the smaller sledge. Even if I don't break it, it is very good therapy. I think about the current admin, them BANG with the sledge. Think some more, then BANG again.

11. In addition to eye protection, wear ear protection, too.
The noise, repeated so long, will be deafening (figuratively and almost literally).

12. Oh yeah, I put in ear plugs.
I am nearly deaf already from years of misspent youth working in bars and restaurants. Don't want to make it any worse.

That sledge can give a nasty bark to those shins.

18. No, Birkenstocks, silly!
The cute ones with the fabric covers that I bought two years ago, but they got stained so I wear them around the house now.

I do need a pair of work boots. I usually wear a pair of worn out running shoes. Not enough support or protections. Where do you buy work boots? Sears? I have nice hiking boots, but I don't want to ruin them.

21. Got gloves.
On my second pair for this job already. The lathe tears them up.

I will check out the shoes next time I am in a K-Mart. Always love a new pair of shoes :P
