Just made felt from a wool sweater |
|
This is the first time I ever tried this. I found a wool sweater from Italy at the thrift shop for a few dollars. A soft minty green. I washed it with hot water in my front loader washing machine for a full, long cycle. It's now drying outside in the hot sun. I was pretty skeptical because my first crack at new projects don't often go without a hitch. But it felted nice!
I haven't decided how to use it yet. I was thinking of cutting it up for faces on small stuffed animal dolls. You make the stuffed critter and then add an oval face of felt that's embroidered onto the head and also embroidered with eyes, nose and mouth. Or I might just use it to sew a small shoulder bag for myself.
Wool felt is a small fortune at the fabric shop. Hancock's Fabrics is having a sale starting next Thursday. They have a coupon online for 40% off one length of fabric. I'm going to get a yard of wool felt since that's a great price. They carry a very wide wool felt on the bolt.

1. Do you wear hats? Make a hat. |
|
Sweater felt is fabulous for hats. I have one that a friend made - it's made on a crusher pattern (the standard winter hat these days) and it's the cuddliest hat I own. I wear it every chance I get, even if it is hot pink and clashes with my hair.

2. It would make a very warm hat |
|
I left it in the washer a pretty long time. It's finished air drying and I keep turning it this way and that to examine it. I guess I'm just so glad the project wasn't a bust so far.
I'm glad you've got a nice hat for those windy, winter days!

3. Time to pull out the straws, though... |
|
It was 84 today. 84. In April!
Enjoy your felt. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun to play with.

4. I didn't realize it got that warm |
|
I was pretty much chillin' inside. Looks like we're going to be in for it this summer. Time for summer "keeping cool" summer crafts.
