Ventless range hoods?
Anyone have one? Does it do any good? Currently, there's no range hood in my kitchen. I'm installing new cabinets and the cabinet over the stove is much shorter, so I was thinking about getting a range hood. I've found a ventless (recirculating) model and was curious if any of you have any experience installing and/or using one. Thanks.

1. Obviously they remove little, but they do help ... a bit
They have wire mesh filters. These serve to remove some of the grease that comes from cooking. Not much, but they help. Mostly what they do is dissipate the vapor. They don't do anything for smells.

As I said ..... better than nothing ... but not much.

2. They do a fair job of removing larger particulates
and a poor job of decreasing smoke and kitchen odors, even the ones with the charcoal filters. However, they're better than nothing. Just change that filter when it starts to get scuzzy.

In other words, if you burn something, the fire alarm will sound.

The main thing it'll do for you is give you a good light source above the stove.

3. We don't have anything above the stove but a pot rack.
So I use splatter screens religiously when I fry. They help a lot.

4. I'd bet that a spatter shield will do more about grease than a
ventless range hood, really.

6. Mine helps a bit.
It at least pulls smoke/fumes/steam, etc from the cooking surface so I can see what I'm doing. The light comes in handy too. For thirty to thirty-five bucks, it's not a bad investment.

7. Thirty five bucks? Where did you find that?
The one I'm looking at is about $150. I also have a non standard size (24").

9. i got a really nice one that was the floor display at my local appliance
dealers for about $35 too

and with the small size you are looking for a unit used as a store display would probably be an affordable alternative
