the bathroom demo started today!
the mirror was stuck to the dry wall, the tub and shower stall are out, the cabinet doors on the floors are covering 4" holes to (hopefully) keep the bugs out until tomorrow

woohoo! :bounce:

Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 05:15 PM by AZDemDist6
white wall LOL

and the floor is nasty peel and stick tiles that have seen better days for sure

what I won't miss is that gawd awful "garden tub" that wasn't deep enough to get a 5 year old wet and took 16 square feet out of the room

BTW I found a good ol boy to make those drawers in the kitchen for me today. if he does a good job I'm gonna have him whip up a "window seat" for under that big window ( the broom is leaning against the window which is about 3'x4') with storage for my comforters in the bathroom. i'll make a cushion for it and it will be a nice storage solution and look nice from the main house too

I can't wait for the tile work to be done, the guys that have been doing the work are great, but geez I'm ready to get everybody outa here so I can finish unpacking and figuring out where every thing goes

5. That's one thing I'll be glad to get rid of
I have a 1950's "standard" tub that isn't big enough for anyone over the age of six but which barks my shins nicely when I get into the thing for a shower. That one will be a shower.

I'm putting in a Japanese soaking tub into my new bath. No jets, just a one person, sit down tub to soak in that one day a year I need to SOAK, http://www.arpbathtubs.com/soaktub.html or http://bathtub.at-house.com/bt03.htm

Anyway, that's what my plans are showing. Whether or not it ever gets DONE is another matter.

15. I hear ya on the "garden tub"...
...they are pretty much punk, in my book. And I say that as someone who was darn near seduced by the thought of lolling in one, looking out a window with a fizzy drink nearby. We saw several when I was house-hunting and I have to admit the *concept* appealed, and they sure looked pretty.

Then I woke up and came to my senses.

1. I don't really like fizzy drinks except sometimes a little mineral water.
2. I live in an ARID region with frequent water scarcity, I'm gonna have a giant tub? Not!
3. I'm gonna haveta CLIMB INSIDE IT to clean it? NOT!!
4. I take *maybe* 5 or 6 baths a year, mostly, I'm a shower person.

We ended up buying a place that has a tub/shower combo in the master bath, but the tub is an extra-deep 1-person jet tub. This is the best of all worlds for us, since the Darling Husband likes an occasional bath (couple of times a week) and uses the jets now and then. We're both large folks and the extra-deep works fine without too-much water since it's regular-tub narrow.

Having figured all this out, I wouldn't have one of those monster tubs as a gift. In an area with low-flow fixtures mandated, can you imagine just how long one of those puppies would take to FILL?

wetly,
Bright

16. I agree with all of the above
which is why the main bathroom will have a large shower instead of the tub.

It's impossible to sell a house that doesn't have a tub, don't ask me why, so if I am compelled to install one, I'm going to install a useful one.

The second one I linked above is a water miser among soaking tubs, and the first one linked was second on the list of Japanese tubs for low water use.

The only fizzy drink I like is Perrier and the only cleaning the tub will need is when I'm on my way out of it, which has worked in the past when I've had the luxury of an old clawfoot tub back in Boston.

18. Hahahahahah..... I KNOW someone who did that!!
A couple of dear friends redid the upstairs bathroom in their older (1920s?) house in Minneapolis on the cheap, and they just put a big piece of plywood over the tub, since they never used it, and painted it and put a shelf on it, and draped fabric over it and put plants on it and objets d'art and a big magazine/book rack! It looked pretty cool, actually.

They redid part of their basement as a luxury shower with adjacent dressing rooms for each of them. Wouldn't have worked for me to go up and down 2 flights of steps between the bedroom and taking a shower/getting dressed, but they had a nice little routine worked out where they stopped in the kitchen on the way up/down for coffee/toast, picked up the paper, etc. It worked for them for many, many years.

amazedly,
Bright

10. true on the paint thing, but we have those damned expansion joints
to deal with so by the time we fill and texture them i'll have to prime anyway so might as well do the whole wall

20. I found I had to pick at and peel the paper
because it was too slick to have even primer stick to it and I didn't feel like sanding whole walls.

I really wish those guys would do primed sheetrock and expansion joints (really just a way to reduce the labor involved in taping) instead of that loathsome wallpaper they all use.

4. EEW, at least they used double sided tape to the drywall
in my trailer, so I only had a couple of minor holes to plug.

Now you've seen the 1/4 inch sheetrock. Don't be too dismayed. They have to do that for weight considerations.

I do hope you weren't wedded to that wallpaper. I don't know why trailer builders do THAT, either. It was a great joy to peel it all down and tape the sheetrock and get it painted.

6. a room at a time
we're going to take down the expansion joints and paint a room at a time

this room probably won't be the first one done but OTOH i'll be half way home on this one so maybe it will

either way, I'll be glad to have my shower in my bedroom instead of schlepping the whole length of the house for a shower. AND we haven't unpacked the bath yet since we aren't using it yet so we're basically living out of our "travel bags" in the other bath

and the sooner they get this done, the sooner they'll be done and gone as this is the last job

7. I like painting bathrooms.
Nice, manageable sized job, although removing the wallpaper will add considerably to the labor. But it is nice to have a room all the way done.

the budget started getting tight so we gave up the glass or acyrlic blocks and it's just as well with the hard water around here, i'd never be able to keep them looking decent

when are the counters due to arrive? soon I hope!

the estimated tile need was WAY off, so I had to scramble to find more tile. I ended up with this nice tile for the floor. the walls will be 6x6 classic white. depending on the electrician, we should be showering by Wednesday or Thursday.....

26. Jeez, what were they thinking?
Usually the interior spaces in a trailer are all beautifully planned. They must've given the bathrooms to a new hire.

I can see why you called it a useless shin-barker.

I think the only thing I used my smaller and out of the way garden tub for was sloshing out the dirty mini blinds.

walk in showers. mine is done in tile -- even has a little seat which i keep my shampoo and conditoner on. also has 2 shelves. my huband's is glass block with cultured marble on the interior. he has a vertical spa. you know the one where all the jets hit you at once. my tub, in my bathroom never gets used. it's strictly for resale. it's also hard to get into. lol

35. Go to a medical supply store
and get one with a plastic top you can bleach, if necessary, should it grow mold.

They're lighter, too, easier to shift around. The one I got my parents was this one, because I knew my pop would end up standing on it. The handles on both sides are a bonus.
