2. July 17th actually
but we hired some help for the construction

I did the final cleanup and sealed the tile today so the hired guy could get back into the master shower (we'd be done in there but are waiting on 50 pieces of bullnose tile)

wait'll you get a load of the SHOWER

it's so close I keep going in there doing a happy dance

the floor in the room should be finished up tomorrow as well as the last bullnose pieces and the final grout

we still need to do a lot of sheetrock work and paint, but if we can start using it, I can live with the ugly walls for a couple more weeks

and then FINALLY I can finish unpacking and get the master suite done. I ordered some really cool furniture to go in there and it arrived today

I am getting so pumped!

the bad news is that we bought a nice BBQ Sunday, Mr K put it together today and had to do the propane tank switch thing and when we went to take it for a T-Bone spin tonight the gas was leaking like crazy. We hope it was the exchange tank that's doing it, we'll get another tank tomorrow

Tell me about that pot rack. It looks wonderful, and I kind of have the same thing in my kitchen - no place to put a pot rack but above the sink.

correct length (it was 5 or 6 foot IIRC)

DH notched out some scrap 2x4 to hold it steady and keep the weight off the flimsy fascia trim (he used his door hole/lock drill to start them then cleaned it up with a jig saw, he says if he had a bigger wood bit it woulda been cleaner)

I bought O rings and S hooks, hubby closed one side of the S hook onto the O ring and slipped em on

total cost less than $20 and it would hold my cast iron easily

9. You're using rubber O-rings?
They'll work just fine ... but check 'em every so often ... maybe yearly. O-rings have a habit of developing hairline cracks that ... grow. Its not in any danger of falling apart fast, but over time it doesn't hurt to replace them. They're pretty cheap and I suspect replacing them is pretty easy.

.... actually, that's what I thought I recalled from your first post about the pot rack. But the term 'o-ring' means a rubber ring. So ... uh ... my knee jerked. :)

14. Gawjus!!! I am in awe...
....because I can tellya this, less than a month after OUR move-in date, the kitchen here did not look anything like as good!

Are those pot lids on the side of that cabinet? What are they hanging on? That is a very cool idea that gives me furiously to think. I have inadequate pot/lid storage in the current setup and had more or less decided to just live with it until the next round of improvements which will (hopefully) include an island. But it really chaps me to be always pawing aside lids when I'm trying to get a pot from the cupboard. Ideas, ideas...

And congrats on the graphics job interview, hope it goes well!

admiringly,
Bright

NAILS!

just little nails pounded into the cabinet

my FIL came up with that idea when we did the pot rack in the old kitchen and here it seemed like a good idea too

I don't think you were around during that project, but here's what it looked like

16. It turned out great - and a question
The kitchen feels like a very friendly workspace. It's easy to see a cook in there going to town. I hope you can get the shower issue resolved. I read about that in the other thread.

My question is about your wonderful pot rack. I'm still trying to figure out how you got that right side accomplished. It looks like it's resting on the top of the cabinet. But you said that hubby added a piece of scrap wood for support. Is that wood on the inside of the cabinet? I have a place in front of a window that I could do this. I have a length of structural support to the left of my window and a cabinet on the right. But I don't have that space above the cabinet to work with. I think I'd have to add a piece of wood to the inside of the cabinet for support and then add a bracket on the outside to hang the rod. I love this idea. It would be great for me to hang my small vintage pans. I can find S-hooks to fit the openings in the handles.

17. no, it rests on the TOP of the cabinet behind the fascia boards
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 10:59 AM by AZDemDist6
the fascia is very weak on these cabinets

as for your situation, a piece of 2x2 inside the cabinet and a hanger on the outside should work fine. get a pair of the hangers designed for closet dowels and the pipe should fit fine, or just use closet dowel, paint it to whatever color you want and get bigger 'O' rings than I have

just be sure to take a pair of pliers and close one side of the 'S' hook onto the 'O' ring so the 'S' hook doesnt' fall off every time you try and remove a pan

here's what I mean with a pair of closet pole sockets, one is enclosed and one is open to the top to slide the rod into. they come in wood or metal, the metal are stronger and cheaper prolly

edit to add, the shower will be fine, we figured a "work around" that will be good

18. Thanks!
I was thinking of similar pole sockets in the metal. Nice to have a choice of wood, too. Since my current 1/2 round pot rack is black, I thought to try and coordinate. The vintage pots have the black handles, too. Your idea is going to help me a lot since I never could find a standard rack to fit that spot.

I'm glad you got the shower deal figured out. New fixes with glitches can be disappointing. We've had our share of work arounds up here, too. For instance - We're getting a new roof on the cottage. It's a flat roof and the roofer is doing a terrific job of constructing a new roof with a slight pitch for better runoff. But the house is old and the living room ceiling is starting to crack badly in one spot since the work began.

The roofer has been very careful stepping around. But we've already replaced the kitchen and bath ceiling in the "great remodel of 2003-04". So, now we're facing getting the living room ceiling taken down and replaced. One thing leads to another. We've decided to do the bedroom too and then ripping out the carpets and getting the laminate flooring in the two rooms.

We're not talking big rooms, here. And at least we're accustomed to the processes involved. When it's done we'll have a nice little guest house/slash craft studio! But not without its headaches. Meantime, I'm going to start packing my craft supplies and rig up a tall board to help give the ceiling some help staying up till we're ready. Autumn is a better time to do this kind of thing.

If it's not one thing - it's six!

20. eleny .......
I should think your existing wall cabinets would support the pot rack with little, if any, additional bracing. Use the closet pole 'cups' described by AZ(NM)DemDist6(2) - you know .... the schizophrenic :). Screw one right to the side of the wall cabinet. If the side is thinner, use nuts and bolts instead of a screw. If you have to resort to the nuts and bolts, get a 'fender washer**' to go between the nut and the inside face of the cabinet side. This will serve to spread the load over a larger area and overcome the thinner wood's propensity toward some weakness. Make sure everything is very tight. Then add the pole and s-hooks, etc., and enjoy.

I'm assuming you'll be hanging your old Magnalites? If so, they're quite light enough that this should work fine. Remember, *any* wall cabinet holds a LOT of weight. A few aluminum pots will matter little.

**Fender Washer - small hole/large flat surface

I chose H2S as a way to ride her coat tails to early credibility as a newbie.

My name is Stinky and I'm a BBWIG (Baby Boomer Who Wants Instant Gratification). :)

I'll hang the three small saucepans. The fy pan is large and might be a bit too heavy. The saucepans are in three sizes and should look pretty cool up there.

24. I actually think even with the frypan it will hold just fine
The attachment to the side of the cabinet is the weakest point. I'm assuming you can fasten it securely to that piece of wall on the other end. If the sidewall of the cabinet is sturdy enough to securely hold a screw to mount closet pole cups, it is more than strong enough for all the Magnalite. The second option, with the fender washers, is even stronger than the screws.

25. Yes, the left side is very strong
It's part of an archway made of cinder block and then covered with tongue in groove cedar. We can drill deep and insert anchors into the block for the screws. If I can hang the fry pan on the span away from the window, I'll hang it, too. Thanks, Husb!
