Does anyone watch "Design Star" on HGTV?

I've watched it hit and miss over the schedule. I like the show and hope to catch all the episodes even if it's out of sequence. Last night's show was the last. The public gets to pick the winner by voting on cell phone or on the HGTV web site. The winner will be announced this Wednesday.

The final challenge was to create a room that is actually a tiny one room glass house that's located in the middle of Bryant Park, NYC. Anyone could come and watch the designers working on their rooms.

1. I tried

but found out I wanted to punch most of them. Eeee-yikes, what are those people thinking?

Then again, I generally like the "before" pictures better than the fussy, overdone "after" pictures. All I can think of is dusting all that designer crap for the rest of my life.

However, one show I love is the cake guy, the obviously working class guy who makes amazing cakes and occasionally blows them up as part of the party presentation. Now THAT is a show!

4. I've wanted to hand out a throttle or two, myself

But if I had one complaint about the show, it's that they don't allow enough time to complete projects well. I always need thinking time. Weather it was at work when I had to analyze information for investigations or redo a room in our home or just reorganize for space. It's the problem I have with so many shows these days. Give people less time than it would take to do a great job and the viewer feels a raise in blood pressure. Bleh. But I've always got so much curiosity about the results that I keep going back for more.

6. Her last design of the glass room was disappointing

And her perkiness got on my nerves. I think David gets it even though he's way too beige for me. I do find his rooms relaxing even if I would always add some more color.

20. Oh, jeez, I caught snips of the marathon they're running

and they love Alice on camera, but the superior designer is David, although I wonder how many of his designs will wear well over a period of years.

Alice is obnoxious and her designs are pedestrian. They might wear a little better, but that's because she really doesn't take any chances. She also loves brown on brown and pastels just a little too much.

The model from Texas was the most irritating of the bunch.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, though.

3. I've seen a few of the shows ... but now find myself ....

.... changing to Discovery or History or Food channels.

That woman from Texas was getting on my very last nerve. Also Clive Pearce is okay helping Lisa LaPorta sell houses, but he sucks as a reality host.

But overall, I have this decided predisposition against contrived realty teevee in all its forms.

5. You would go nuts watching "Runway" then

Talk about prima donnas and competition run wild. Those clothing designers play more mind games on each other in the series. Once I watched the whole season when they had a marathon. My husband thought I was nuts and he was right!

10. Now I'm the one in the dark

I have seen promo clips of Tucker where he and his sidekick are dancing doing the 80s thing. And maybe Scarborough was in on that, too. I didn't know it was a competition. I'll give you this - you've got a stronger stomach than I.

11. Its a teevee show in which celebs partner with ballroom dance pros

and compete. It is really a lot harder than most people imagine to do ballroom dancing and not look like a total geekoid.

8. Never watch "design" shows...

...cause I think "interior design" is appallingly over-rated. Most "designed" magazine spreads, newspaper pics, etc., make me go "huh?!? Who wants to live in THAT?!? Where do you stack your partly-read newspapers, where do you put the tray of seeds you're sprouting, where do you display the nice vase your best friend gave you for your wedding anniversary, where do you LIVE?"

The only real utility I can see for "interior designers" is to help someone who doesn't have anything already pick out draperies, upholstery, rugs, etc., that won't scream at each other. Why would you let someone else arrange your stuff? Or worse, tell you what to buy? Or worse yet, make you buy stuff you don't need (and have to dust?)

I just don't get it.

I'm always more comfortable in a nice, clean, homey room that's got the owner's stuff collected through a lifetime of experience and enjoyment in it than in one of those exquisitely aesthetic 'don't touch anything, don't move anything, and sit over there 'cause your sweater doesn't match the color scheme' places.

9. I love the "Design on a Dime" type shows where they can only spend

$500 or NOTHING is better (Design Remix or Free Style)

I watch for ideas and have got quite a few watching em

my step mom got her bedroom redone by a pro after my dad died and it's awful! way too full of dark furniture and fussy pillows etc

15. Himself had one of those shows on one time...

...and I sat and watched it. It was interesting, and I was impressed by their creativity and the results appeared dramatic. But a good deal of the items had a sort of 'cobbled together' feel that made me wonder about their long-term durability and/or practicality. The sort of thing that professionals with much experience and skill can do well and make it look "easy" but that if you tried it yourself, in a year or two you'd look at the ottoman or the room divider or whatever and go "What was I THINKING?"

But maybe that's just because my attempts to creatively improvise have so often proved ineffectual at best and sometimes outright disastrous. If you've got the 'knack' maybe it works out better.

I generally try to keep to my strengths (arranging the stuff I already have well, and picking out stuff that I'll enjoy living with for the long term,) and try new stuff mostly in low-risk situations. It's cheaper in the long run.

16. The best one is "Free Style"

where they go in and rearrange the stuff that's already there.

I like those arrangemnts better than the "before" pictures, where apartment dwellers seem to have had movers just dump everything where it would bark the most shins.

The worst one is "Cash from the Attic." I wanted to slap the fat pubbie last night, sending real family heirlooms off to auction to buy a damn hot tub. What a witless, tasteless dope!

I still get a charge out of watching all the silly design trends. They make me appreciate my own style: early thrift shop with dashes of Mad King Ludwig.

18. I saw that show last night - CFTA

She needed such a throttling! I couldn't believe that she pushed to sell the beautiful mandolin. And for what - a hot tub? I had to laugh that at the end she said she wakes up in the morning, gets a cup of coffee and relaxes in the hot tub.

I have my dad's accordion. I can't remember a week that went by that he didn't spend time playing. I'd have to be dead broke before I would let it go.

I just started paying attention about three weeks ago. I thought David's glass room was just beautiful and felt very serene. I liked all of David's designs that I saw so I voted for him.
