Anyone here tried carpet tiles?
I have to replace the carpet in our master bedroom. It's old, worn and has a few areas that our cat decided to shred. I'd rather not spend a heap of money on it for wall to wall carpet and have seen several sites recommending using carpet tiles, squares that stick to the floor and, at least according to the stories, after a few weeks and some vaccuuming, you can't even see the seams. It's a lot cheaper than wall to wall and it seems like a snap to do it yourself.

But I haven't found anyone yet who has actually used it. Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

1. i've seen then in several places where I worked and don't go for the
"can't see the seams" stuff, plan for it to look like a checkerboard and buy plenty of extras

2. I have Flor tiles.
http://www.florcatalog.com/?source=flor.com&gclid=CISCl_Sk7IgCFTaVFQoddh3KoQ

It works well and I plan to purchase more for my kids rooms once my finances have recovered from last summer's kitchen/bathroom remodel. I have two kids and two dogs, so I like that I can pull up a single tile for cleaning rather than sending the entire rug out.

We have some cheaper off-brand at work which hasn't been as good. The tiles don't stick as well, etc.

3. I could always see the seams
I've used them in a couple of bathrooms that had nasty vinyl tile on the floor.

However, if that bedroom has wood floors, I'd advise getting a nice area rug or two, instead. If you glue carpet tiles to a wood floor, no matter what shape it's in, the people who live in that place after you do will curse you.

4. There's an article
in the Dec/Jan 2007 issue of The Family Handyman magazine that is all about the how-to's of carpeting a room using carpet tiles. You might want to check it out. For the article, they did a multi-color checkerboard type pattern with the tiles (which I didn't really care for) rather than a solid treatment.

You may need to look for the magazine on a newstand or in the library, I don't think it's available online.

5. It's eco friendly because you can replaced stained squares instead of scrapping the whole carpet
The green building here says that their supplier will even recycle the squares to get the polyester out. I would think that that was the greasiest, dirtiest recyclable ever. Hope they don't plan to make me a new sweater out of that polyester.
