Anyone have a cheap but good way to make a birdbath?
Hello!

we have TONS of birdies in our yard all year long, and when we have irrigation water thru the city in the summertime, the birds LOVE to roll around and play in the puddles left by the sprinklers....

WEll, this winter has been really dry (precip-wise) and I don't know if I can count on irrigation water this summer to keep my birdies hydrated and bathed.

Hubby and I want to make something for a bird-bath. We're both students so $$ is really tight---I can buy a ceramic one for about $20, but even that is out of my range at the present time.

Is there anything CHEAP!!! that I can use to make a bird-bath? Right now I have a flat lid from the cat-litter-bin with about an inch of water that the birds are just LOVING....didn't know if it would be preferable to have something higher-up (they dont' seem to mind it being on ground-level)

Help me, all you DIY-crafters on DU!!! Gimme some ideas :)

thanx

hed

1. Get a big clay planting pot with a removable saucer
Flip the pot upside down, and put the saucer right-side-up on the bottom of the pot. I saw this on HGTV.

I'm making this one myself in a couple of weeks (as soon as I find a big enough leaf).

3. i go a haunting my thrift stores, something would likely show up
and if you just end up with a terra cotta pot and saucer, it's gonna be cheaper than buying it new :)

4. I found a beautiful huge terra cotta pot that had been faux painted
for under $5 at a thrift store.

5. yup, i find stuff like that all the time at my stores ( i have 4 or 5
"favorites")

it fulfills my "shopping" urge with out feeding the corporations, is easy on my pocketbook and good for the environment too!

Win Win Win in my book :)

6. Make sure that the paint...
if you have any in the saucer (where the birds are drinking) is non-toxic.

7. DIY birdbath
Here's a way to make a birdbath that looks inexpensive but is attractive to birds:
