Need to saw a wine barrel in half
but I don't have any power tools, just a hand saw.

What's the best way to cut this beast in half, so I can make some planters?

Should I buy a jig saw, and are there any specifics I should know about that? And how expensive are they anyway -- I can imagine it being a useful tool to have for other purposes, so I wouldn't be opposed to getting one.

And speaking of power saws, if I only wanted to buy one, the most multi-purpose, which might it be?

Thanks in advance!

1. Mr. Longhorn says get a circular saw, also called a "Skilsaw"
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 02:28 PM by Longhorn
though that is a brand name. A jigsaw would also work but he says if you're only going to get one power saw, a circular saw is the way to go. He said you shouldn't spend more than $100 for a homeowner saw.

He's been a remodeling contractor for 30 years and owns just about every power tool known to man. :)

Oh, and he says you could probably pick one up cheap at a pawn shop.

2. yep - circle saw is the way to do it
go rent one - that should not cost very much.

I did the same thing - made 2 planters from one barrel - the circle saw made short work of it.

Kinda keep the saw on top - and roll the barrel. You will need someone to help you with this and keep the barrel under control. But only takes 5 minutes or so.

3. Sounds kind of dangerous to me for someone who never operated
a circular saw to be using one for the first time on a rolling barrel. I can just imagine what might happen if it kicked back on him while the barrel was rolling. I think a jigsaw would take a lot longer but would be a heck of a lot safer for someone new to power tools.

4. Hire it out. Ask a friend to do it.
If you've never used a circ saw before, you run risk of serious injury trying to cut something as awkward as a barrel. Damn, I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

Run an ad on Craigslist saying you'll pay somebody to come cut it for you.

5. perhaps there is a DU'er in your area
it really is not a difficult task - but I understand the concern should you not be familiar with the use of circle saws.

If you happen to be in the Daytona area, I would be more than happy to bring a saw and cut it for you.

Maby driving by new housing construction and asking a construction to do it. He (she) might do it for a case of beer!
