I hate vertical blinds! But I need to put something over an arcadia
door. I've fumed about these since we moved in about 8 years ago, and I can no longer stand it (plus I have a little extra money right now).

I'm not much of a DIYer, though I can handle tools and am an accomplished sewer.

The door faces south and is under a patio eave, so insulation isn't terribly important, although I am in Phoenix, so every little bit helps!

I'm almost considering Roman shades; the door isn't used that much as we also have a nice patio at our side door with much more afternoon shade.

I welcome any ideas--those ugly pieces of plastic have got to go!

Thanks.

on sale, I was hoping that a new one with a cute topper might look better

i can't do roman's as mine is a slider, but if I had french style doors I think roman's would work well. They are very easy to make too

on another note, did you get your dishwasher? what did you decide on?

Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 12:18 PM by KarenS
supposedly they are pretty easy :)

mine is just a regular window though,,,, I'd think if you have a sliding door, you'd have to make two.

not quite ready to do it, but when I am ~ I will do searches in the internet(s) to get directions ~ Crafters are very sharing people!!!

on edit: oops I now have visited the link provided above,,,, these look like good directions!!!

3. Window treatments for sliders
For privacy, you can also find decorative film you can apply. Wallpaper for Windows made my Contact is one brand out there, and I know there are more. There are contemporary styles along with some with a more traditional appearance (including a stained glass look). Of course, there is also plain film out there which can help on your air conditioning bills.
Add some kind of nice top treatment to do with your decor.
If price is no object, you can find someone to install sliding plantation shutter doors if it goes with your decor.
Otherwise, vertical blinds or drapes as far as I know are your other options.

4. I hate those things too!
I couldn't figure out what to do with the slider so I ripped it out and put in a French door with tinted windows. I don't have any window treatment at all on it and I love it! I was thinking about doing some ornate stenciling around it just to jazz it up a bit.

The worst thing about those damn vertical blinds is the dust. Mine got so dusty. I can't wait to tear down all the other ones I still have (in the bedrooms).

You're right, they are ugly!
