Garden breezeway for a trouble side yard.
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 10:30 AM by The Backlash Cometh
I have a trouble spot along a property line. A massive house was just built next to mine creating a privacy issue, as well as noise problem with their driveway. It affects most of the bedrooms in my house.

Since I love gardening, I thought the solution was decorative fencing along the problem areas, maybe fence, bush, fence, bush kind of idea. Then in the narrow sideyard, (12 ft by 12 yds) I would add a breezeway and allow vines such as wisteria, jasmine and honeysuckle to grow. The idea is to give the bedrooms a spectacular view, and to add some sound proofing between the homes.

Privacy would be added by allowing a thick bush at the front to grow so that the side yard could only be accessed by a cedar arbor.

I don't mind purchasing a lot of the materials, but I would like to get your thoughts. Maybe you all have faced this problem before and have a better idea?

1. That's certainly a beauitful and fragrant solution
My folks had a similar problem many decades ago. They installed a chain link fence with privet hedge staggered on both sides of the fence. The hedge grew to about 6' and was left to form naturally instead of being shaped. It was a frugal solution that worked well to create a green wall that looked very nice. The chain fence was just about completely hidden. That was back in the day before wooden fencing became vogue.

3. Actually, we've got a chan link fence around a small pasture area
I never liked link fencing. But it comes in colors these days. We got the brown and it pretty much disappears even with no bushes. I like it so much. With plantings, it could be a solution which allows for air to pass through.

4. I've been looking at a variety of screening bushes.
I think spirea is a really nice looking bush that grows about 6 feet tall.

5. the thing that I find with honeysuckle
is all the bees that it attracts.
It might not be something to consider for that reason--although it is quite beautiful and quite fragrant.

6. I would throw in a skyrocket juniper
If privacy is a concern, I would plat Sky rocket junipers.
My neighbor has a backyard enclosed in sky rockets and you can not see into the yard -AT ALL!

They are at discount stores now, so not pricey, and a great habitat for birds. Dang I need to plant a few!
