Anyone here have a metal roof installed or install it yourself?

Any comments on prices, colors, materials, techniques, etc? We're replacing a flat roof with a peaked roof this summer and plan to go with a metal roof.

1. I've only imagined doing it

I have a shed roof over a deck that needs to be replaced. I want to do it with metal and may well do it myself.

I've done a lot of research, including talking to pros and suppliers, on the internet and off.

Metal is a good roof choice, for sure. Long lasting, durable, stylish, ecofriendly, etc.

No cheap, but not outrageous, either. It comes in many styles and many price points, and can be colored or galvanized.

I particularly like green standing seam or 5V.

If you plan to do it yourself, check into the type of roof you want to install and see if a non pro can reasonably be expected to do it. If you will have it installed by pros, then it is simply a matter of writing a somewhat larger check.

You said you're going from flat roof to pitched. Metal roofing needs a minimum 3/12 pitch.

2. I have a metal roof on my mobile home

the old owners DIY installed it. they were pretty handy, but certainly not experts.

the roof has these rubber washer thingies on the nails that you make sure not to smash up so the water can't leak through the hole.

Just make sure the rubber thing is in good shape (don't pound the nails to death) and it's pretty easy otherwise. She said it went up real easy once they figured that out and the metal was easy to cut and trim where it was needed. They installed it right over the old shingles so we got a little extra insulation too.

I'm very pleased with ours, however I would have gone with a lighter color than the maroon she choose so it would have stayed cooler in summer.

3. We just got our metal roof installed, and we are very happy with it,

three weeks ago we had golfball sized hail and our roof is/was 23 year one layer singles... time for upgrade anyway. Insurance came thru. We found someone local and found a good deal.

4. Had a 7200 sq. ft. metal roof installed

as part of a project two years ago. I have the material listing,prices at the office. It is costly to install and buy but it,s the best roof you can get. The roofer needs to be fully experienced in the metal roof. Valleys can get tricky. And some of the newer three tab is 40 and fifty year. The high end three tab goes 30 ,40 and 50 year at the top end.The commerical building I had done was going to be the new grade three tab fifty year ,I had that installed on one of the partners house, the other partner had the metal roof on a 12 12 pitch cabin and was sold on the metal roof .The installer ran into complications with the valleys , so we got a specialist to come in and do those and another complicated area. The roofer I gave the job to had his experience in residential ,not commerical.But it all turned out fine and within budget. On the roofing end ,very good.

If it,s lastability you are most concerned about you might want to take a look at the newer high end three tab.

5. This is going to be a real DIY for the records. We have a flat roof

in snow country, and between the leaks and the occasional shoveling, it's got to go. My husband has spent the last 20 years accumulating materials in our barn; taking down other people's barns and garages and accumulating the good lumber. He's put metal rooks on our barn and out buildings and the front porch. His plan is to build an entire third story with roof over the existing roof, then remove the existing roof at his leisure from inside!

6. It,s a darn good way to get lumber!

Thats interesting because on the buliding where my office is some years ago we built a pitched roof over the flat roof. Left the old roof on but cut a opening for a drop down ladder in the secound level. it became storage . Now we are looking at sub dividing the now, third level so that four units will have a secound floor! It,s a question of who or what unit gets more space!
I stuck the water tank out of my unit up there and closed off a rather fair share of it !
The roofer across the hall wants his fair share too! I don,t how much will be left over after that! It,s just a matter of constructing staircases and some sub division framming ,all plumbing vents run up there so there,s the drainage! And power is a snap.It also pays the rent on it!

7. we installed a metal roof several years ago

I first took a picture of the house, then used photoshop to change the roof color so as to get a better picture of what it would look like. The photoshopped pics were not perfect, but it did help in picking the color we eventually ended up with - and I was able to show the pics to various people for their opinions.

8. I have one on my house

it's a small ranch. We did this a few years ago, and I absolutely love it! The snow slides right off, sounds like an earthquake when it hits the ground. I can not hear the rain or anything like that. It's maroon-ish to match the trim on the house. It cost me 5k. Put on right over my old roof, even though the shingles in some spots were covered in moss. The cool thing, the way it's installed, is that there is a barrier between the two roofs, and the moss dries out and dies.

11. Galvalume is a popular choice. 40 year warranty. Lots of colors.

Steel with an aluminum powder coat.

You can cut metal roofing with a circular saw with the blade reversed.
