ok so i posted my list of thing a while back and well it looks a bit cranky so i decided that since i can't really buy a bunch of new things (still want!) i would just suck it up and work with what i have. So what i did was some major editing, a lot of subtracting of accessories that had no theme or made any sense at all, again, what in the hell was i thinking when i bought some of this---crap, yup crap that's what it was. Ok so what got me going was the purchase of a new tv, the tv we had in our family room was shoehorned into an armoire, at first i liked but then a grew to hate that armoire because it just looked wrong in that room, so the new tv required a new stand so what to do with the hated wrong room armoire, well we moved it into the living room aka "The grave yard", we never ever use the living rom because it sucked, for real, old beat up furniture and way too much cutesy crap, just not a room conducive to being in, same with the dining room, too much crap, table too big and just not a place you could relax.

Ok do we move the armoire and i decide to really look at the room, what is good and what just sucks and can i work with this, i mean i must like some of it a little right, can't be all bad (this is what is going on in my head at the time) so i de clutter, move a table, add a plant, omg dding a plant on a stand in the corner where the plant gets-----light! Holy shit on a ritz cracker if that wasn't what did the trick, this poor plant lived on the dining room table and it was leaning in the direction of the window, how sad is that, it was like the plant was trying to get it self over to the window to get some sun (or to jump out which i would have understood totally) and then i finished up and went on to the never used dining room, i removed 2 leaves from the table, who the hell am i having over anyhow, there are 3 people that live in this house i have a table for like 14, so i made the table good for 4-6, de cluttered my side table, cleaned it and the dining room table and then busted out the lemon oil.

ok so now i have reclaimed 2 rooms and for the first time in 8 years i really like both of these rooms, for real. I took some pics, i'll spare you the before and i didn't take any but this is the after, now i still need new furniture in living room but i think the armoire found it's home, i'm still not in love with it but i think maybe it should have been in the living room all along.

Ok, here is the dining room, on that little table there was a ton of stuff, now it's just some pics and a few loved little bits

This is the little walkway that leads to the front door and the living room, i still hate that light but i can afford to get that replaced so hopefully in a few weeks that will go away

Here is the living room, pic is taken from the dining room, again the furniture is a bit sad but i think the room looks much better

this one is the living room straight on, behold the dreaded armoire, it seems to have found it's home

And last one with the flash.

Anyhow i still have a big list to do but i feel better.

1. I feel like I just watched a make-over show on HGTV!
:D

Great job! That looks like a really cool floor plan, too. The best kind of redecorating is when you don't spend any money and like the results! :yourock:

2. Thank you. The floor plan looked great when i found the house on the internet
but in reality it's been kind of challenging, tri level with high ceilings and terrible acoustics. I am really happy with the rooms though, my daughter got home from school and said "Wow Mom, i would really like to sit in the living rom and read now" so that made me smile.

3. The arrangement of furniture is fine
but the small frames of photos need new homes. They are all too small and hung too high.

(I have some Chinese calligraphy which would look stunning next to the love seat, but you can't have it)

The living room looks like it WORKS the way it is, and I can tell what a challenge it was to figure out where to put the furniture. All it needs is a little pizazz to make it look like a place people want to spend more time in.

5. dealing with the pictures are next, the one in the living room is just going period
and the 2 in the dining room that you see, well my husband hung up both 8 years ago, the concept of being able to actually see it is lost on him plus i want to change the frames out for something black. I like different shapes but i really like them all the same color.

Edited on Tue May-13-08 07:51 AM by AZDemDist6
I found some great ones at thrift stores. think a can of spray paint and new little shades and go haunt your local thrift store. I had the exact same entry hall light, and look what I found for $15 thrifting for the old PHX house

before:

after

cost $15 for the fixture and another $15 for a new halogen bulb and Voila!

and hubby re-worked the old light and came up with this for another part of the house

7. One way to update your armoire, would take a little work, but....
I would sand it down and stain it in an accent color. There are a lot of new colors to work with now a days. Since you have some blue accents in your room, I think it would look really good if you could find a blue stain to give it a new life.

Just a thought.

I think your pics (in #2) would maybe be enhanced if you rehung a couple on a diagonal line. It might add some interest to the grouping.

I like how you have been able to reclaim your living spaces. I'm sure it has given you a new perspective on your living environment.
