you have a half inch gas feed line to your fire place ?Or does that pipe in the wall go to your gas meter? Perhaps the half inch pipe in the wall feeds off a 3/4 pipe ,black in color which intern ties into the meter outside. just guessing of course. So if my guess is right you are already plumbed for gas at the location ,is that correct? If so ,where exactly is that gas line fitting in relation to the fire in the pit ? OK so, plumbing code, have you thought about that? By the way did you read the spec's that came with the gas log set up? You know the how to do and what to do part in the installation instructions ? What about a picture of the fire place the gas feed line ,the apparatus you mentioned that you would like to disconnect and the new set up you wish to install. The state you are in with regards to plumbing codes. In specifics, fire place inserts.
The key is that pipe fitting must be in perfect alignment with the gas log heating unit you wish to install. Plumbing codes for gas lines are strict, you must not over look those codes. To be clear, if you hoke it together and something happens, your insurance will not cover that mistake.
It must be plumbed to code.
