anybody get tools for christmas? i got

a dremel with pretty much every attachment know to mankind. even the extension thingie.
not sure how i got this far without owning one, but i do now. good timing, too, as i am about to do some woodwork refinishing.

they don't seem to make planes like they used to. i noticed the one the floor guy was using. it was on a long handle, and had the blade right on the end like this one. are they all like that these days?

7. How does their quality compare to old Stanleys?

I have nine old Stanleys acquired from family and bought from various sources. I haven't used them in (more than) a few years, but they're all in really great shape. Easy to adjust and a pleasure to use. Nice, long, thin shavings.

Your new chisel plane looks a lot like a British one I used to see in a high end woodworker's catalog. The catalog name escapes me.

I think their manganese bronze models are particularly fine (and beautiful) tools.

On edit:
A lot of their planes are actually based on old Stanley's. They have improved the chipbreaker (much thicker and redesigned) on those that have one, most of their blades are substantially thicker than the old Stanley's, they use a new heat treating process on their blades, etc.

I think the fit and finish of the Lie-Nielson tools meets or exceeds the old Stanley's, which were prime tools in their own right.
