2. no, the 'wood' work was in the original
and no, I hired it out. with all the big cracks where the expansion joints were, we got a professional plaster guy to come and tape and texture it.

it's looking good though, warm and rich day or night

I am so pleased with the color, the pics don't do it justice.

it's called "Restrained Gold" from sherwin williams

 back atcha

and yes the color is as warm as the fire's embers. the handydude refused to comment on the color as he as putting it up, just kept saying "you don't want to hear my opinion"

then he came back a week later after we'd gotten some more put together and said "I thought you guys were nutz, but dang, this color is really rich and warm"

and as I review the pics, the first pic is very very close to the real color on my moniter

5. So many people are uptight about color
Last time we painted, I went to paint store and got a strip of four colors in the yellow family. Cream to soft gold and we used them all throughout the house. It's not a giant house, so we gave it a theme with cans of paint.

I think wall colors make art work look terrific, too.

May I ask where you got the rug? Great price including the delivery! I got an email from Home Decorators Collectors online store the other day. We got a bathroom cabinet from them and I hear from them all the time now. Anyhow, they're having a free shipping sale on tons of rugs. I'm tempted. So congrats on the lively rug with a great deal!

And good for you for having someone come in to deal with the tricky stuff. Sounds like he learned something from you. ;)

One last unrelated thing - have you been having a lot of high winds down your way this winter? We've had more wind storms these past few weeks than any other winter in memory.

8. yes it's been windy but quick to come up and quick to die down
the rug came from Home Depot

did you see the link with the pics of the art? they don't show up in these well at all.

the new dining set is from Home Decorators, but their rugs were too pricey for our needs with Mr. K's allergy to wool and having 3 dogs and a cat.

I used the color card to pick the white for the windowsills and it's wonderful to pull the colors together like that, you need to take some pics lady

11. I'll have to head over to the Depot more often
Luckily, I did find a reasonably priced rug for in here. I mash the heck out of them in this office and replace them every other year. You inspired me, so I just ordered it.

Hubby recently went on a honeydew phase. Put up our living room and dining drapes, floor length tabs in here and coverings on the sliding doors off the kitchen. It all made the house more comfortable - and got the folded drapes off my chairs.

Pictures? But I use tassels to tie back our drapes! After the White House dinner dishes thread I think I'll lay low. Hee-hee.

I actually ordered some Penny's drapes with tassels. luckily I didn't cut them off since the colors aren't gonna work now and I am returning them.

I put gold sheers in all the windows but need to shorten them by about 8" and plan to make tiebacks with the extra material

I got back tab panels arriving tomorrow in three colors of grass cloth

http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?DeptID=60156&CatID=63561&GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=1502924&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=60156|60193&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=10&CmCatId=60156|60193|63561

I'm hoping one of the colors will work. Spice is my guess.......

and I've been dying to try out that back tab hanging system

The spice does look like it would fit right in.

I've never heard of backtabs. Strips of fabric that slide onto the rod? If so, I think I'd like that a lot. I could fold down the tabs to the back on these floor lengths and hand stitch them down and and and! :D

10. it's a work in progress, but I'm pleased so far. our house in AZ was
white/white/white for so long, it took me a while to get Mr. K to come around and I did very little color there and usually over his strenuous objections

here, he's convinced I'm not going to ruin his house and lets me do the color choices now :bounce:

I don't know who designs those things in trailers, but they're the most useless pieces of wasted space I've ever seen, even though yours was a little better than the one I crowbarred into oblivion.

29. Yes, I did work in a custom drapery workroom business.
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 08:41 AM by troubleinwinter
I did not do any of the fabrication (I do know how to sew, but hate it, and will do most anything to avoid it), I was more "the troubleshooter". I "translated" between the nutty decorators and the workroom. And coordinated the intallations. Installers were usually off-duty firemen. They were personable, responsible, knew how to handle tools and enjoyed some work on their long off-day schedules.

When we bought a house about 18 years ago, the living room had five walls. Four wallpapered in brown, green and METALLIC gold stripes, one wallpapered in huge brown, green and METALLIC gold medalions. Gold and green shag carpet. Four big windows with pleated sheers, gold and green patterned brocade pleated draperies and stationary pleated side overdrapes, tiebacks and swags and jabots. Never saw so much STUFF piled onto windows. We ordered a dumpster.

EVERY SINGLE room in that house was wallpapered. I spent a year stripping wallpaper. I particularly remember the teapots and tomatoes on the kitchen walls. I SWORE I'd never buy a house again with wallpaper.

So the next house had wallpaper in every room. EVERY SINGLE room had roses. Entry, living, dining, family, bedrooms and bathrooms: ROSES. The kitchen was pink roses! Except the hallway, which had a painted mural about ten feet wide of bunnies, birdies and butterflies! Another two years of stripping wallpaper.

25. I missed a step along the way....
I moved into a small doublewide a coupla years ago, and though I've generally hated white walls as reminding me of 'rentals', I sorta got a kick out of my white-painted vertical board paneling. It had a feel of a summer vacation cottage.

Now I am ready for color again. So here's the question: What did you do to get the smooth non-grooved walls? I see the little vertical joint trims are gone, too.

If you sheetrocked, do NOT tell me! I have sheetrocked & taped for the LAST time. I'm OLD! (at least old enough to determine I ainta gonna sheet rock no mo' atall)

26. nope, not sheetrock BUT yes on mud and tape
you pull down all the strips, fill the gaps with mud and tape em, then we got a REALLY good tinted primer and mixed it 4parts mud to 1 part paint, them with a VERY thick piled roller (we used 3.5") roll on the mud/paint mix as texture.

then paint. the key was the tinted primer, tell the paint store what you're doing and tell them to tint it dark or you'll need a TON of top coat paint.

it was still a lot of work, but from here on out, changing color is a breeze

28. For many years I've had primer tinted.
It sure helps. But I've never heard of the mud with primer trick. I've used mud/roller for texture, but adding primer is a great idea!! "tint it dark" is an important tip.

!!It's just beautiful!! It takes the 'mobile home' paneling look out of it!

30. and that was the point. Nothing screams mobile home more than those
damned expansion joints on every wall in every room :banghead:

it chops up the room so much, your eye doesn't make a sweep around and losing that chair rail really gave it a clean modern look.

I found drapes yesterday too, but I have to tack up the tabs as the tab top look was yuck. luckily the hem was a perfect rod pocket

they are a suede stripe in root beer, chocolate, espresso taupe and gold

:woohoo:

33. You should try some rose wallpaper. I swear, it'll change everything.
Big ones, small ones, medium ones, giant ones. Different in every single room!

I thought you'd ordered the back-tab grasscloth type drapes??? They were good looking. Nice texture.

As much as I dislike draperies in my home, I think the back-tabs are clean & simple looking.

I looked around to see if any company (like Kirsch, Conso, Wright) had gotten 'hip' yet and started making backtab woven tape so that a person would just sew on a 4" tape instead of making all those tabs one's self. Seems not. Checked even professional drapery workroom suppliers. I think they are behind the times.

the texture just wasn't working at ALL

I found some suede ones at (shudder) WalMart after trying 5 different panels from penny's and looking everywhere I could think of

sadly they have tab tops so I'll have to tack those up and use the hem as a rod pocket

in the attached thread there's a link to the units

I'm using one panel per window, so closed they look very tailored and opened they stack on each side of the windows that frame the TV and with the coordinating gold sheers, I like the look
