I have slanted walls and need advice

I live in the upstairs of a converted barn, and I can't for the life of me figure out what to put on the walls.

Anything big (like posters) looks overbearing and like it's about to fall on you.

Anyone else face this problem and have any suggestions?

2. It's rented

and my landlady won't let me paint.

One of the problems is that there are only 2 windows in a 2 bedroom apartments, so if the walls aren't up to par, there's not much else to look at. I've been there since june, and it just looks so unfurnished. An additional problem is that the carpet is dark green, so there's no balance.

3. see if there is a coffee roaster in your town

some of the coffee bags are very attractive and cheap if you don't buy them at Cost Plus or Pier One

5. I don't understand why you can't paint if you paint it the original color

before you leave. :shrug: My daughters both painted their apartments and either repainted before they left or had the cost deducted from their deposits.

Of course, you know your landlady! :D

I asked her if I could paint and she got an expression like she'd have a cow if I did.

I'm not allowed to drink or have pets, and I am a snake-owning inebriate, so I am already breaking the rules.

4. Here's what I did when I was renting...

Of course, I couldn't paint, either; so I bought fabric in colors (which I would have painted the walls with) and covered simple lathe frames. Then I hung the panels on the walls.

Really cheered the place up.

9. Muslin and decorative tacks are your friends.

Muslin runs about $0.90 cents a yard for the narrow stuff. Buy as much as you can afford, and 4 bottles of RIT in 2 complimentary colors (2 each) you like. You'll also need a couple of cheap buckets.

Tack the fabric lightly to the walls and ceiling across the arch. Cut to right dimensions; there should be a seam that runs across the roof. Repeat until you have the walls completely covered. Divide in half. If you're doing alternating Pull the fabric down, wash in warm water, but use no softener. Do not dry.

Pour 1 color of dye into 1 bucket and add enough water to make 3 gal. (those 5 gal buckets Lowes sells work well here.) Repeat with the other color. Deposit one end of half of the strips into each bucket and hang the other end up high. The dye will wick up, going from very intense to very pale. Leave this for 24 hours.

Rinse the fabric carefully at the end of 24 hours, then dry to set. Now tack up permanently, with the light ends at the top of the ridge. That will draw the eye and keep the rooms from feeling claustrophobic. If you use complimentary colors, you can alternate them or put them on opposite sides of the room.

Is your apartment in your landlady's house? If not, then she can't put restrictions on your legal behavior. (And sex and drinking are still legal....)
