So, I remodeled the Dinning Room. Before, during and after pics.
I bought this house about 2 1/2 years ago.
This pic is before I bought the house. It had wall to wall carpet that
was old and stained.
It has pine floors under the carpet that needed refinishing. The entire
house had wall to wall that needed to go away.

I refinished the floors in the living room. dinning room, upstairs hallway and
one bedroom before I moved in. That's about 2 feet of snow outside

I made it as livable as I could until I could do a makeover.
But beige paint and floral borders and sand paint ceilings are just not my style.

So the remodeling begins. Stripping the border off, removing loose sand paint
from the ceiling and patching cracks and sanding the walls. I also removed the
bookcase because it just wasn't built to match the existing woodwork and I wanted
a light switch on the right when I came in the front door.

I wanted a panel style ceiling but didn't really have any help to put up
the drywall so I did the next best thing that I could do alone. I cut 25
individual pieces of sheet rock and covered the seams with 1 x 4's. It was a lot
of work but it was manageable by myself

I think it came out pretty well. I like the ceiling and the paint color. The
furniture fits well. I can seat eight because the table has built in leaves that
pull out from either end. Not bad for a room that 1s 12x12'

Had a maple hutch in the barn that matches the table and chairs pretty well.
I shrunk the curtains when I washed them but I can move them down a little with
some new hangers.

And Mose looks handsome in the new room.

All in all I am happy. It's so nice to have another room off the to-do list and
in the done column. :toast: :toast: :toast:

1. That's a really great job!
I love that vintage house, too. Great old woodwork. The charm (I know ... I'm weird) of exposed pipes added after the house was built. Room dividers.

Great job on the ceiling, too! Very ingenious solution to working alone.

Kudos all around.

3. What a nice room!
The ceiling is beautiful and will be a conversation opener for years to come. I like old houses, too, and you're doing right by yours. Thanks for all the great photos showing your progress.

We have to redo our kitchen soon and I'm not looking forward to it!

4. Let's exchange kitchen ideas...cause my kitchen is next also.
I love to cook and I consider the kitchen to be heart of the house.
I have to warn you that i am the ultimate pragmatist and that will be reflected
in the design for the new kitchen. And money is in short supply so
making a silk purse out of a sows ear is the challenge.

Glad you liked the dinning room, and thanks for the compliments. They
are heart felt for sure.

6. About the kitchen
I'm wrestling with the idea of high end materials that are the rage on one hand and my real desire for practical materials that I like best. For instance, I don't like granite because it's mostly so dark and requires more care. I like laminate countertops because they're easier on ceramics & glass bowls etc. I also like lino on the floor instead of ceramic or porcelain tiles. Lino style flooring is easier on the feet and also warmer.

I always worry about selling the house in case we decided to move and then we're up against what's expected. But I have the feeling that we can find alternatives that are practical and current such as cork flooring for the kitchen. It'll just take some research and sticking to doing it "my way" when I have to make a difficult choice.

Well, we'll see you in the trenches! :D

8. I'm getting to the eleventh hour on the kitchen and bath
and I've already decided on laminate countertops. They're cheap, attractive, and hard to destroy if you've got decent cooking habits.

If you do screw them up, they're cheap to replace. They're cheap enough you can replace them just because you're sick of the color.

I'm also the same about the flooring. I've had a wood floor in the kitchen and come to the conclusion that they're for people who don't cook. I ended up weaving a bunch of rag rugs to cover it to catch the spills and dropped stuff but they still got dinged up. Linoleum gets dinged up, too, but it's not that big a deal to replace it when it gets really foul.

I'd be more inclined to spend the money on good appliances and sturdy cabinets.

My bathroom, however, is a 1946 special, really tiny. That sucker's getting a slate floor.

9. We put a hard tile flooring in our bathroom
I like it a lot.

Definitely yes on the laminate countertops. I've had almond color laminates since the early 80s. When we moved the fridge and put in new cabinets there a few years ago we were able to match the old counters with new laminate the exact same color.
