Anyone know where I can get a FLAT bath rug?
I know everyone likes fluffy bath rugs. So do I. But my bathroom door won't shut over the ones I can find in the stores and I am not about to have the door taken off and planed down. The one we currently have is quite old. It was made by his grandfather's rug factory back in the 50s and is literally falling apart. It is a perfect size for our bathroom, 44" long, 24" wide. There is barely a half inch from the bottom of the door to the floor.

Got any recommendations?

1. Sure home depot or lowe's or a builders supply that sells carpet/floorlng
Those rugs are flater than flat and have a rubber bottom ,you just hang those rugs up to dry on a towel rack or over the shower curtin rod and it dries fast.

I bought one for my dog ,those rugs work great!

3. They sell them at Target and places like that...
I have one in the ugly bathroom mentioned above. It's not the most attractive thing in the world, but it's flat and it's washable. I don't know how well it would soak up water from a bathtub.

4. I throw a towel down for the dog than throw the towel and the rug

over the bath bar! And surprisingly enough the flat rubber bottomed rug does absorb a fair share of water! You can tell because the rug become's very heavy! Reminds you of water and sand mixed.

Indeed I would imagine department stores carry such products.

5. Sure, I've gotten plenty of them over the years
from all sorts of places. What you're looking for is either a woven rag rug or a flat bath mat. You can get the former at big box stores, discount craft places, import stores, and sometimes dollar stores. You can get the latter at bed and bath stores and some department stores with large housewares departments.

I have a peach chenille woven rug that's exactly what you want, but you can't have it. It's just the right size for my bathroom, too.

FWIW, I'm not nuts about the deep pile ones, either.

6. Warpy, I have less than one half inch to work with! It won't work for
ANYHTING in Bed, Bath and Beyond or Home Goods. I've looked and looked. I'm getting a little desperate. Next time I am actually going to carry a tape measure to see if I can find something that is less than one half inch thick. I don't think I'll find it...based on my search so far...

The flat rubber bottomed rugs are closer to the out door carpet stuff but works perfectly in bathrooms for what your situation is. Being a contractor I could say cutting the door a little at the bottom is no big deal ,but maybe that is .

Now it was already mentioned those thin rugs do indeed hold a fair amount of water, And since you would put those by a exterior door or basement floors ,or have little children play on those rugs, in fact the rug I use for my dog in the bathroom is just that ! It is not advertised as a bathroom mat or rug, but it is great for that and it dries rather quickly.

I found those at Lowe's . home depot has those too. I imagine department stores have those as well. You have seen non slip carpet seeming stuff that is put on steps perhaps, or stuff they call carpet runner? It is sold where you buy carpet. At Lowe's or home depot, being a contractor you will find that stuff in flooring. Do not despair it is a simple problem to solve I assure you.

Now the flat rubber bottom rug I got was on sale at a discontinued price ,! It has kiddo designs in it and kid dy colors but my dog don't really care about all that! Of course I will have chosen something more appropriate seeming but the price was just too good to pass up! About $15.00 is what those cost more or less. Nobody wanted the kiddy colors so I got it for $5.00 bucks! It's great.works well, does the job and is very thin.comes in various sizes too.

Do you have a home depot or lowe's out your way? Or a place like that? Just ask where they keep carpet runner out door matt's ,stair runners and stuff like that. you'll see . Thin rubber bottomed rug .

8. Can I get them in a color that's appropriate for a bathroom?
I see these outdoor carpets that are all dark colors, for good reason of course to absorb dark mud stains. But in a bathroom you want light colors usually or at least I do. I don't want it to look like a dark, outdoor carpet. So what to do? I'll look, as you advise, and see what I can find...I'm just not very optimistic...however, I won't pre-judge before I look.

I'll report back what I find. Thanks for your help.

I truly appreciate it!

9. Let me just say those rugs come in designer colors
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 07:54 PM by Wash. state Desk Jet
in fact those rugs ae designer rugs.I just happened to notice the sale items, the designer rug nobody wanted to buy! I wasn't considering those rugs to solve the problem although I was rather pressed with the problem at the time along with other matters .
You will find something very cool and pleasing .$20.00 ,you know twenty bucks something like that. Just don't go to a place that specializes in carpets because you will pay more than is necessary.

Which means, yes you can !

Good luck and happy hunting!

10. They have the feel of the ones I have outdoors...
I've never seen white or any kind of print but they do have lighter colors and some with stripes. You're right, though, mostly blues and browns. I have one in taupe that's fairly light. I know my foo foo friends probably turn up their noses, but I can keep this clean and the door opens and closes over it so it works.

14. Actually, with under a half inch I'm not sure I can get what you recommend.
I have a few other places to check out...I'll let you know...

This is too bad, the rug is one my husband's grandfather made in his factory in Wisconsin in the 50s. It is special to him and I respect that. It is also very nice. But the poor thing is giving out after all these years...textiles just don't last too long...as you might imagine, this is becoming an emotional issue for us...

11. Because of a number of constraints, we had to use a real carpet
in our upstairs bath. Bought a rug remnant and cut it to size. It was quite a job because a template had to be made to fit around the hopper and little ins and outs of the small bath.

What if you went to a carpet store and bought one of those ready made rectangles that are bound? They make great door mats. Perhaps one would work for a bath mat.

I have also seen woven bath mats in stores like Target and Kohl's that are shallow and would be suitable.

12. We have bath mats that are essentially thick towels
Quite thin as compared to those fluffy bath rugs.

Kohls usually has them.

13. I'll look there, thanks. But I do worry about slippage.
But maybe it doesn't matter. The rug we have now (probably made circa 1952)doesn't have rubber backing, as you might imagine!

15. The rubber backing is, to us, a downside
It never seems to last as long as the rug might otherwise. The dryer seems to kill it. We have not bought a rubber backed rug in years.

16. I really don't need rubber backing in the bathroom. I have one in the kitchen near the door.
That kind of mat is inappropriate in a bathroom however as it just screams outdoor/indoor. And all the colors it comes in are dark.

Somebody told me to look over at J.C. Penney's but I went on their website and didn't care for what I saw...I will go to the store, tho...

17. Have you thought about buying what ever bath rug you like and than
paying a handyman to trim down the bathroom door to accommodate the bath mat or rug? On remodels where flooring is installed trimming doors can be part of it. Most likely it wouldn't take much trimming to make it work.
I am assuming with a bath rug down on the floor now,it stops the door.Would it matter much to you if the gap between floor and door is just a tad bit more.? All it takes to trim it is to pop out the hinge pins ,lay it out on a saw horse clamp down a guide and trim it at the bottom to the desired hight. Shouldn't take more that a half hour. And using a good plywood blade on a skill saw you would never know the door was trimmed.

It's just a thought.

18. I did that once (not me, I hired someone).
I guess I could, I would just like to avoid that expense if I could get a mat that is OK.

I might end up doing that, tho...I thank you for the suggestion...

20. Planing it down wouldn't really be all that bad a job
I'm speaking from experience since nothing is standard in our home. So we've had to employ all sorts of work-arounds. Planing a door is a simple matter that doesn't take much time at all. Fuzzy mats really are nice. :D

Good luck!

21. Would a remnant of a
piece of Berber carpeting work? You could check at carpet stores for something that might do the job.

Hope you can find something that works. :hi:
