A couple of months ago I had to repair the dish washer again. It's 10 years old and has needed a pump replacement twice so far. The first one I hired a plumber to come in and the most recent I did myself. I always watch any tradespeople like a hawk and try to get them to answer my questions about what they are doing and why. That is how I learned how to replace the pump, I watched the guy and found out that it's easy as pie to do if you're even the tiniest bit handy.
Recently, the drain hose got clogged by a piece of plastic wrapper (we still have no idea how it got into the dishwasher). So I dismantled all the hoses starting at the back of the dishwasher and worked my way toward the sink drain connection. I found the plastic clogging the drain hose right where it connects to the sink. After I cleaned that out I put it all back together and ran two cycles with no dishes (one cycle I added a 1/2 cup of bleach). That was a couple of months ago and we haven't had a problem since.
One of these days we're going to replace the dishwasher because it has only one water jet, at the bottom, and we find that pots and pans placed on the bottom rack can block the water from getting to the top rack, some dishes there do not get fully clean. But ever since I learned how easy it is to fix a dishwasher that day is being pushed farther into the future than even I had wanted.
