hit counters

I'd like to put a hit counter on my site. I have tried a couple, but none progress. Any help on this would be appreciated.

1. There are plenty.

From the lack of technical information (what kind of server etc) I gather you're not that "tech savvy".

There are any number of "remotely hosted" counters that you can use by putting a simple line (supplied with registration) onto your homepage:

2. I have tried several but with

less than stellar results. One never got back with me to activate it.

I just signed up with them to see if they will respond.

I've used them before and it seemed ok.

Better yet, host somewhere that offers traffic statistics. That way you really understand your traffic patterns, where they come from, and how they navigate your site. That assumes such information is important to you.

4. I use sitemeter, it's pretty good.

Non-obtrusive and useful.

8. I think I have fixed the problem with the counter.

When I use the publisher function of NVU it truncates a url in the source code, removing something like 40 characters.

So far no hits from IE. They have all been Mozilla and Safari.

5. Suggestion: Don't make it visible until the number is high

There was a study on general web practices several years ago that revealed the impact that web counters have on your credibility. If it's visible and the number is low, people assume that you aren't popular and that your views can be discounted. If your counter is high, people automatically give you more credibility.

So either hide your counter until the number gets up there, or start the clock at 1 million or so :)

6. I agree

To me, hit counters are unprofessional in their appearance, regardless of count. Fortunately, sitemeter is just a little icon. I'd prefer to look at stats reports, and have a clean web page unadorned by some silly counter.

7. I put site meter on.

So far either I am not getting hits, or the meter is not working. I notice it is not counting my visits.

BTW site meter code doesn't kill validation. I put the validation tag on there and the NVU tags because I support both.

I am becoming a big fan of NVU.

10. Thanks. The problem turned out to be the

editor. It was changing the code when publishing the page. I now skip the publish option, using my terminal or other ftp program to do the upload.

I have been using NVU.
