So where do you live?
If you fel comfortable sharing this on-line pls share. I'm curious as to what the climate is like in your community, city, state, etc. for interracial, mulitiethnic family/couples?

Are you happy where you are? Have you ever wanted to move someplace else?

I'll get things started--

We live in Southern California. While couples and families like ours seem to be growing in numbers it still seems to be hit or miss in terms of the social climate. Socal still seems to be rather segregated, particularly in the Orange County area. Which is weird to me. When in Anaheim one can see a great deal of diversity. But OC is still the area (rarely) that we may encounter a look/stare, etc.

Our immediate community we never get looks or stares. It's pretty diverse here but it's still too Repub for my personal taste. LOL!

We LOVED being in Northern California over a year ago to visit family. We saw lots of people that looked like us and it was SO friendly there! We would love to move there! We have discussed moving and are still considering it.

Bliss :)

1. In 1990 we had census workers stalking my neighborhood
I was only ten so I'm not sure why but they repeatedly came knocking on all of the doors on our block. My mom, like most of the other adults in the neighborhood, avoided them because she had already handed in her forms. One day while playing relievo a woman decide to question all of us kids. After asking where we lived and how many siblings we had she asked what race we were. Between all of us there were three black and white families and one Hispanic and white family. I won't say what we put the poor woman through but they left our neighborhood alone after that day .

I guess the whole point of this story is that Boston, or at least the parts I grew up in are full of interracial and multi-ethnic families. This area has its fare share of problems but overall I like it. The only times I want to move are on days like today when it snows.

4. in Connecticut... my old & current neighborhoods are pretty diverse
In my old neighborhood, one could (if they had strong enough ears) hear English, Chinese, Polish, Portugese, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Hindu and a few others that I'm probably forgetting. There were several inter-racial couples as well out of maybe 100-120 homes.

I'm in a new development now in a small town and it has maybe 30 homes now so far. We live next door to another inter-racial couple and two houses up the other way is another. It's pretty diverse as well - several Asian (Far East) & Indian families, as well as black, Hispanic & white. I'm guessing that 100% white families are less than 50%.

No problems at all in either neighborhood.

5. I split my time between two places in CT
My folks place in Ansonia, which is a small, blue-collar town of about 20,000. Where my house is, it's really residential and mostly white folks.

But downtown, it's a real mix of people.

I also have a condo in Waterbury with my man. It's also blue-collar, but a bigger city.
Really diverse.

8. From the responses thus far
it seems some of the big cities are becoming more diverse.

I know this is the case here (in southern California). I just wish that it wasn't still so segregated in ways. I realize it is changing and the biggest changes are going to take time--I'm just impatient I suppose! LOL!

I see many people use "dh" and I have no idea what it means.

Right now in Maryland we have about three inches of snow

My memories of the central valley always range in the 100s, never cooler!

Though I am sure it is cooler now. How is all the rain?

14. Shanti, where are you in Sacramento?
We are looking around to move, either northern California or possibly out of state altogether.

We liked the vibe we experienced there, except for the 'gated community' where one of my hubby's brothers lives. He's a total snot and despite growing up Dem, he has become an asshole and Freeper. His gated community friends seemed rather conservative too.

But the mall where his other brothers' wife works--not far from where they live it was SO COOL! Very nice vibe--friendly people, etc.

I've heard it's kind of like down here--some areas are liberal, some conservative.

19. Texas City here...
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 03:06 PM by Lisa0825
as back-asswards as this area can seem at times, racial issues seem to better here than many places.

My former boss (in Houston) was black. He is a doctor from New Jersey. He was being recruited by several teaching hospitals, and he said one of the deciding factors for him was that while looking at houses, the real estate agent did not try to steer him away from ANY neighborhoods, unlike in other cities he'd visited (including Dallas).

In addition, interracial couples here seem to be in all social and economic classes. In some places I have lived, it was more common to see the artistic types or higher-education students dating interracially, but the average blue-collar types seemed to still be segregated.

Down here, I often see folks of all types of backgrounds dating other races. I like that.

20. Metro Atlanta
in Dunwoody, northern part of the "inner" metro area (expanded from the original 5 counties to the present 14 counties). Dunwoody is one of the better zipcodes in the area. I live in a complex that is very diverse in residents, but the area itself is not. I frequent a few of the locals bars and restaurants, and the clientele is not very diverse. In my favorite watering hole, I can be one of the few (or only) darker faces in the place. Doesn't seem to be overtly political. The few times I see political bumperstickers, they're both W and Kerry/Edwards.

Sometimes I'm asked how is it getting phone numbers. I actually say, "Look around. Go for it. Sometimes you get the elevator, most times you get the shaft." I REALLY want to say, "You're asking me? I'm the only not-white guy in here, I'm the wrong one to ask. I'd probably have a better chance winning the lottery than getting a phone number. Look around. YOU have got better chances than me, and I'm better looking than you. <sigh> The gods are not merciful. Now, quit wasting time and get busy! You're cutting into my beer drinking time."

I am sure that there's hope. Atlanta bills itself as "The city too busy too hate." Someday, that will be true.

There are a lot of interracial couples here, mostly black and white, but there is still also a lot of racism as well. We currently live in a mostly white neighborhood and many of the folks who grew up around here are still like that.

I want to move out of this state but I have to wait until I graduate.

I'm hoping to be able to squeeze five into this coming fall semester, then try and get my school to waive the last class. If I can do that I will graduate in December. If not, I'll have to take that last class in the spring and graduate next May. I've been trying to get my BA for nearly eight years, so I'm quite excited to finally get it done.

28. Bliss...
I'm in Northern California. My husband and I are happy where we are, in terms of the region of the country. He's VERY protective of me and we've had very little problem. We're moving further north where things are a bit less liberal BUT we still feel fine. When we've gotten any "looks", it's been from black men. I think that it's more of a shock to black men when they see a black women with a white man and this is only happened on a few occasions over the 8 years we've been together. I love the north coast the most and this is where I feel most comfortable and am looking forward too buying a property there. :bounce:

31. A Good Thread to Start Accepting Your Invite, bliss_eternal!
We're in Central Maine. I'm White, ChicaAzul is hispanic (Puerto Rican to be exact) and our son is African American. We are accpted VERY well here in 97% white Maine and our son is one of the most popular kids in his class!

Whenever we go back to Philly though, I realize how much I miss being with African American people! I'm PROUD that my racist cousin thinks I'm a "race traitor". I'm amused that he doesn't say it to ME and thinks I don't know his opinions.

Here is our American Family Quilt of many colors. It's my favorite family picture, taken almost a year ago before our son's 5th birthday!

Peace
