1. I know what you mean.
Technically, I'm just a non-Christian person of faith (Religious Science), but I support my progressive Christian friends wholeheartedly.

I think that progressives (some of them) can be VERY tough on liberal Christians.

is when everyone beats up on you. I'm either too left for majority Christian's or too Christian for other lefties. *sigh* I guess in some ways I'm just a freakazoid.

3. Progressives will never have a problem with True Christians,
the problem is we are the silent majority. Satan, knew what he was doing, by recruiting the RW nut bags! Thanks for your support and come to the haven here. We love pretty much everyone, but we don't have to put up with their crap!

big group. If you are a Christian, then you are considered a fundie. It is sad really.

8. Trouble is
If we're not shouting from the rooftops, every day, every hours, then we're "enabling," or "silent."

I rarely participate in any religious discussions on DU because one gets tired of being told one is an idiot -- or that one believes in a being on par with the Easter Bunny, Santa, etc.; that one has not "grown up yet" until one casts off the shackles of belief.

Tired of all that crap. Like there is no room for an adult experience of God's love, like that feeling has to be lumped in with Santa? It is so annoying...

11. One has to take reflection of their hatred toward Christianity
(fundies included). Look to reasons, if you visit spiritual boards, so many were turned off to God, because of false teachings they were taught. I would say that a great number of Christian haters were actually brought up in so-called Christian homes. Remember, reformed fill-in the blank are the most radical of all.

When they thought they were rebelling against God (not the false teachings), they felt they made the break. Many, take long walk abouts (some can be years and years) and eventually find a Church that fills their cup.

If you are truly a Christian and your Church tells you to support a Govt. that tramples the poor in money and spirit, infirmed, etc., how can you reconcile that with "Love your neighbor".

Once again, this is the fill-in the blank fundamentalists of fill-in the blank religion, vs. the true followers of the spirit of the word, not the letter of the law!

problems, with having fundamentalist groups that want to hate anyone that is not like them. I personally believe, that there are just hateful people, who look to religion to fulfill that hatred through.

edit: The first reformed fill-in the blank is ex. smokers who quit are the most ardent anti smokers. My dad was the rudest smoker I have ever known. He used to force his employees to sit across from him in a meeting and blow right into their faces without any respect for them (did I mention he smoked 3-4 packs a day?).

I smoke and have always been respectful of anyone around me. If I am in a non-smokers house and they say it is ok to smoke there I still go outside.

He now, offers me money to quit and comments all the time about how bad it is for me. I get that, but it is ridiculous to constantly harp on it and comment on it, and God, I only smoke 1 pack/day.

18. I think I'm going to be sick.
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 01:53 AM by RevCheesehead
Now you understand why I never, ever, ever go there anymore.

I'll never understand why some people are compelled to live in so much anger. It's like their life-purpose to spread it around until everyone is filled with hate.

Screw that. Life is too short to be so angry, and frankly, I don't need that shit messing up my life. I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince a group of narrow-minded people about anything.

I just wonder this: are all atheists this angry, or just the ones here? Doesn't really set a good example, does it?

22. I don't know. It's so frustrating. because I think I am clsoer in many
ways to atheists than to fundies, but the atheists won't hear me out on how or why. And then they are out to convert me to not believing. They proselytize every bit as bad as the fundies do!

23. Yes, that was the thread that upset me.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=214x38835 .

Above is the updated link - the mods moved it, apparently.

I picked up damaging beliefs when I was growing up in a conservative church; I recognize the same remnants in others. But if one is angry at a hardright fundamentalist belief sytem, the answer is not to obsessively reject God. At least my answer wasn't that. My answer was to find I belief system whose existence I could celebrate. I'm happy to go to my church every Sunday - it is an uplifting learning experience. Maybe the displaced anger has to work itself out in a productive way. Maybe a few atheists need to resolve a deep-seated conflict within themselves - and find a place and belief system that fits.

30. That's one of the great things I love about being a democrat
My religion doesn't matter unlike with the RNC/republicans. I can have any faith I want and for the most part democrats could care less. We're all working on the same goal for our country.

I recently had to delete a good friend from my IM program because he kept calling me a "spreader of ignorance" and "carrying the torch for the death of reason." And all i said was i believe in god, and a stripped-down christianity. as i said: dude, relax...

27. Isn't it crazy?
Some ultra atheist fundamentalists -- by which I mean, they hate people who disagree with them and believe in God -- are just as bad as Christian fundamentalists. There's nothing worse or more dangerous than people who think, "If you don't agree with me on religion, you're awful."

31. Yes it sure can.
Religion is looked on with disdain by some on the Left and it doesn't have to be that way. Some will automatically equate Christian with conservative fundie. That's due in part to the right controlling the message and shaping the very definition of the word Christian. This needs to change.
